Jewell D. Knutson

Jewell D. Knutson, age 96, of Crandon, passed away Dec. 26, 2008 at the AGI Healthcare Center, Crandon. Jewell was born July 30, 1912 in the Town of Nashville, the daughter of the late Robert and Carrie (Porter) Ison.

She married Carl Knutson in Cecil on Nov. 11, 1936; he preceded her in death on July 23, 1955. Jewell worked as a telephone operator for the Urban Telephone Co. in Clintonville. She loved to work in her yard, with flowers and raspberries being her special interests. Jewell also enjoyed feeding the birds, but disliked the squirrels that ate out of the feeder. She will be sadly missed by her family.

She is survived by sister, Georgine Valley of Marinette and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl; parents, Robert and Carrie; three sisters and three brothers.

According to Jewell’s wishes were to have no formal funeral services. Weber-Hill Funeral Home of Crandon is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Earl Murray

Earl Murray, age 83, of Crandon, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. He was born on Sept. 2, 1925, in Crandon to Roy and Carrie (Adkins) Murray.

Earl attended school in Crandon until W.W.II when he joined the U.S. Army; later transferring to the Air Force. He served in the Philippine Islands. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Crandon where married the former Maxine McPherson and operated a family farm. Together, they had three children. In 1954, Earl married the former Elsie Gilbert and they moved to Flint, Mich. where he managed Sweetland's Ice Cream Plant. The family then moved to Milwaukee where he was employed as a tool and die maker for Barber-Green Co. Earl returned to Crandon in 1970 where he developed and operated the Lake Peshtigo Mobile Home Park and was also employed at the Crandon Elementary School until his retirement from that position in 1987. Over his years at the school, Earl made many friends with and provided much assistance to the students who attended there. He continued to operate the mobile home park until the time of his death.

Earl earned his pilot license and owned his own plane. In addition to flying, he enjoyed traveling in his motor home and he and Elsie visited many places across the country. He will be remembered for his belief and commitment to working hard throughout his life.

Earl is survived by his wife, Elsie Murray of Crandon; three daughters, Myrtle (Jim) Lampos of Spring Hill, Fla., Wanda (Bryon) Matz of Woodstock, Ga., and Eva Murray of Versailles, Mo.; four sons, Jerry Murray Durst of Post Lake, Paul Murray of Crandon, David Murray of River Falls and Ken Murray of Crandon; a brother, Alfred Murray of King; eight grandchildren, Travis, Tregg (Stephanie), and Tracy (Candi) Schweitzer, Joshua (Kristy) Durst, David Matz, and Amanda, Austin and Dakota Murray; and six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jamie, Nicholas, and Nathan Schweitzer, and Abby and Dominic Durst.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Earl Wayne Murray Durst; and a granddaughter, Jordanne Murray.

Funeral services for Earl were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Lakeland Baptist Church in Crandon with Pastor Dave West officiating. Interment was in Crandon Lakeside Cemetery. Carlson Funeral Home of Rhinelander (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) assisted the family with the arrangements.
