The North American Ice Fishing Circuit’s National Championship will be held on Boom Lake this weekend, and tournament anglers are already filtering into town to get some time on the ice before it counts.

The parking lot at the Boom Lake boat landing was already filled with trucks bearing out-of-state plates on Monday afternoon, with a string of fishermen stretched along the channel out from the park.

The tournament will draw 100 pre-qualified two-man teams to the area for the two-day panfish championship. Teams will be after crappies and bluegills, not larger game fish as in most area ice fishing tournaments. Teams will be able to weigh in with up to 16 fish daily – eight crappies and eight bluegills – and are scored on total weight over the two days.

The NAIFC’s Championship Tournament kicks off its season, much like the Daytona 500 on the NASCAR circuit. Baker said sponsors appreciate the push at the start of the season. This is the first time the championship tournament will be held in Rhinelander.

Jack Baker, the president of the NAIFC, said back in August that Rhinelander was an appealing site for the tournament because of its location, amenities and the quality of the fisheries. In talking to anglers at ice fishing tournaments, Rhinelander came up time and again as a good potential location for the championship, he said.

The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday on Boom Lake.
