Lincoln County police search for Merrill man after high speed chase
By Daily News Staff
Lincoln County police are searching for 23-year-old Luke J. Hudak (Who-Dack) after a high speed chase, spanning 20 miles through Lincoln and Marathon counties.
On Saturday at 4:30 p.m. a Lincoln County Deputy on routine patrol attempted to stop a 1996 Ford Taurus in the town of Corning for speeding. When the deputy turned to stop the vehicle, it fled east, leading officers on a chase reaching speeds of more than 100 mph through Lincoln County.
The chase continued on County Rd. Z to County Rd. Q and then south of County Rd. K into Marathon County. Marathon County deputies, who were aware of the chase, were positioning to deploy spike strips when the vehicle turned back to the west on Marathon County Rd. A.
As the vehicle continued west on County Rd. A, a Marathon County deputy was able to successfully deploy a spike strip and disable the vehicle. At that point the suspect fled on foot near the intersection of County Rd. A and County Rd. O in the township of Berlin. Despite the efforts of numerous law enforcement agencies, including the use of a K9 unit from the Wausau Police Department and night vision equipment, the suspect was not immediately located.
Just after 8 p.m., a resident near where the chase ended reported their 2003 Volkswagon Jetta four-door sedan stolen from their residence. The vehicle was recovered on Sunday morning parked at a car lot in the city of Phillips.
At this time deputies consider Hudak a person of interest in the investigation. Hudak is a white male whose last known address was the city of Merrill. Hudak has been known to frequent the Medford and Price County areas including Ogema, Merrill and Medford. As of Sunday night, Hudak was still at large.
If you have any information on Luke Hudak, you are asked to call the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department at 536-6272. Callers may also call Crime Stoppers at 536-3726 or 1-888-222-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward. If you spot the stolen vehicle you should call your local law enforcement agency or 911.
