News : A successful week for bow hunting
Marion Soch Correspondent
(Popple River News) - It seemed to be a successful week for bow hunting, as the count at the Long Lake General Store DNR Registration Station, totaled 44, 14 bucks and 30 doe. That is quite a few deer for one week.
Bill Lange was a lucky hunter getting his deer on Saturday. Most of the kids were up visiting, as were some of the grandchildren and helped with the processing of the deer. This was all done in conjunction with their own hunting and preparations for the upcoming gun season. Bill is always happy to fill his tag. Congratulations to you, Bill and good eating, too.
There was activity at the Stenz, Hoyt and Wright cabins over the weekend. Al Reinhard, was at his cabin too.
The Jeff Van Boxel cabin had a number of hunters, as his brother-in-law, Jeff's two children, Hannah and Max and other hunter, Bill Pokorney were all there. No luck with filling a tag this weekend, though. We had a nice visit with them on Saturday, and caught up on all the news of their group.
Lois Kemps visited with Russ several times this past week. Russ says, "Hello" to all his friends and he is doing fine at the home. He says he gets some pretty tasty meals and lots of good treats, like ice cream, candy, cookies, cake, soda and the like. Sounds pretty good to me. He is always looking for good magazines to read, sports, National Geographic and the like.
Talking about treats makes me think of the treat I made a couple of weeks ago. It was so good (new recipe), I decided to share it with you, since it has a rather unusual ingredient for quick bread. I wouldn't give you a recipe I didn't try first. Try it, am sure you will like it, as it is awesome!
Pork and Bean Bread
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup boiling water
Mix together and set aside.
Mix 3 eggs, 1 cup veg. oil, 2 cups sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla and one 15 or 16 oz. can (I used Van Camps in tomato sauce or store brands will work) pork and beans. Beat together until beans are broken.
Add 3 cups flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt. Add to bean mixture. Mix well.
Fold in 1 cup raisins with the water and 1 cup nuts, your preference.
Pour into greased loaf pans, makes two large loaves or 4 small loaves.
Bake in 350 oven for 50 to 60 minutes.
The bread will disappear in a jiffy. Enjoy!
The Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is having its 4th annual bake sale at the Long Lake Fire Hall on Friday, Nov. 21. Goods will be sold from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be lots of very tasty items as usual, as all the best bakers are putting forth their "all" to offer you the best of the best in pies, breads, quick breads, muffins, cookies, candies, bars, jams, Scott's Sub Sandwiches and who knows what else. Come early to pick out your favorites. The prices will be right and it is for a good cause, support of the area fire department. Donations are accepted at the hall from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and on Friday beginning at 8 a.m. All donations from area people are appreciated. I just may bring some Pork and Bean Bread!
Happy hunting, deer hunters. Good luck and stay safe out there. Hope the weather is just right for you.
Have a good week.
