(Wabeno News) - Hi everybody.

It was Veterans Day on the eleventh of November and most of us, unless we live in a cocoon someplace, knows a veteran or is a veteran. We are able to celebrate because of their valor to save our freedoms. I had four older brothers who all were in the Second World War. In all the places where there was fighting, Africa, Germany, Japan and the islands. Fortunately they all returned home. My own husband was in the service during the Korean Conflict as we were told to call it. War has touched all or most all of our lives in some way or another. Life would be different if it were not for all those men and women who fought to provide what we have now.

In our own little community of Wabeno we have what I will call an “Honor Board” in our Post Office. Pictures of the loved ones who are off to Iraq or doing their duty in other parts of the world to make sure we are safe.

I have received this note about one of those families here in Wabeno, a Marine Family through and through.

Mark Kopecky was raised in Wabeno. He served on Active duty from 1977 to 1981 and with the reserves until 1997. Mark and Dave Renkas also from Wabeno went into the Marines on the buddy program. Now Mark’s sons have followed his lead.

Jake was a Squad Assault Weapon Gunner (SAW) with the Golf Company 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment out of Madison from 2001-2007. He spent one tour in Iraq and is a Corporal.

Ryan is a Corporal and has had two tours in Iraq. He is a Machine Gunner in that same unit and has been in since 2004; the Renkas brothers Matt and Mike are in this same unit also.

Nolan has been on Active duty since 2006. He is a Corporal and is an Automotive Intermediate Mechanic at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina.

Caleb went on active duty in July and received a meritorious promotion to PFC. when he graduated from Boot Camp. He is in Marine Combat Training in Camp Pendleton now.

These are the men who make Veterans Day. It is their passion, their perseverance, and their patience and with them, go our prayers.

Don’t you just love this place? I do! Well gotta go for now.

Tide may be turning on baiting
Deer hunting is a tradition that runs thick among many Wisconsin families. Perhaps the greatest threat to that tradition is the spread of diseases like Chronic Wasting Disease and bovine tuberculosis, and no practice exacerbates that threat as much as baiting. READ MORE >
