Forest County Board votes to support number change in Human Services Board
By Daily News Staff
The Forest County Board of Supervisors has voted to support an Oneida County proposal to increase the number of representatives Oneida County will have on the Human Services Board.
The Human Services Board, which oversees operations at the Human Service Center, is made up of representatives from three counties in the area, Forest, Oneida and Vilas. The agency provides services to those with mental illnesses, those battling alcohol and other drug addiction, and adults and children with developmental disabilities.
As Oneida County contributes the most money to fund the Human Service Center, Oneida County representatives have argued that it should have a majority of members on the board. Oneida County proposed it should have eight representatives on the board while both Vilas and Forest counties should have four. Vilas County, before its November county board meeting, had discussed the possibility of limiting the number of Forest County representatives even further, reducing the number of Forest County members to three while increasing the number of Vilas members to five. However, after a discussion with Erhard Huettl, Forest County Board Chairperson, Vilas County Board members apparently changed their minds. Last week both Vilas and Forest County voted to support Oneida County’s plan.
Oneida County is in the process of studying whether it should continue with its partnership with Vilas and Forest Counties. An 11-person workgroup will decide over the next several months whether Oneida County should continue in the current partnership, create its own Human Services Department or enter into a larger, regional human services consortium.
