(Popple River News) - Is winter here to stay? It snuck up on us real fast, so we may as well get accustomed to the fact it is here. Even the cat stops at the door to the outside, turns around and comes back in, as if to say, "no way am I going out in that stuff!" meaning the snow on the ground. I would like to do as that cat...curl up on the couch and sleep.

Sunday, in the afternoon, the roadway seemed to be quite deserted, vacationers exiting rather early, due to the lousy weather conditions. Who wants to hunt in the snow and rain with the wind blowing? Not many are that dedicated hunters.

Thank you electors for coming to the polls last week. We had 70% voter turnout, which was average this year throughout the nation and we had larger absentee ballot numbers than usual. Sitting on election board, one finds out what has been happening in the town as the people come in to vote. Over the last months we acquired five new residents, so our town is growing again!

As mentioned previously, Wayne and Rosie Konitzer are now living here permanently. They hail from Oconto Falls, but are not strangers to the area, as they have been hunting up here for many years and built their home here a few years ago.

Joe Kraemer hails from Delafield, Wisconsin. He purchased his home from Clay Peters, the old Pagel home, and he has been working on that for a couple years while spending his time here. He did some remodeling and landscaping work around his property to make things look very nice.

Sandy Pautz moved into a rental property on Belunes Road. Sandy is not new to the area, as she vacationed in the Newald/Lake Van Zile area as a child with her parents, the Wetenkamps. After bouncing back and forth to Green Bay, she decided "home" was in this area and took up residency in Popple River.

Daniel Foley hails from California and Chicago and is living in the Craig and Laura Burman home on State Road 139.

All these folks came to the Town Hall to vote and introduce themselves, and we to them. We welcome them to our town and to take part in our town meetings. We hope you enjoy your surroundings and the people living here. Welcome, welcome, welcome!

Stan and Delores La Violette are weathering the winter here in Popple River this year instead of going South to Texas. Delores had an accident at home two weeks ago and fractured her neck, so they have to stay put. This will be a long recovery for Delores, so we wish her the best to be as comfortable and cheerful as possible. I am sure any cards of wishing her well would help cheer her. Our prayers are certainly with her.

The same day Delores had her accident, her son-in-law's (Dan Price) mother, Ardis fell and broke her femur bone in her leg at her home in Sturgeon Bay. Quite an unusual circumstance to have one couple's parents both have an accident the same day in different areas. She is recuperating in the rehabilitation area of the Sturgeon Bay Hospital where Pam Price works, so Pam sees her every day. We wish her well, also, and our prayers are with her, too.

Jack Sticka, also had extensive neck surgery recently and came to his cabin to spend a little time relaxing. Our best to you, too, Jack, and hope all ends well with you.

The deer harvest for last week was eight bucks and 10 doe. Two of the bucks were nice eight pointers.

Last week we had .3 inch of rain through Thursday and with the through the rain and snow over the weekend, we had another .4 inch of moisture. This should help the water table and give the plants and trees a boost for next spring.

Enjoy your week.
