News : FCP does part to prevent domestic violence
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and with the goal of educating men, women and children about the threat of domestic violence in the community, many local organizations have been working together to help prevent domestic violence from occurring.
On Oct. 8 the Forest County Potawatomi Domestic Abuse Program, Indian Women’s Circle of Hope & Healing (IWCHH) and Forest County Potawatomi Domestic Violence Shelter hosted Walks on the Rez.
The walk began at a Forest County Potawatomi (FCP) Recreation Center tent amid a crowd of walkers including mothers and babies as well as people in wheelchairs, and continued down the newly created Hope Path of Healing, a walking trail through the woods off Everybody’s Road.
Along the path were red and purple signs that included information about domestic violence. One of the signs read, “Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexes and classes can be perpetrators of domestic violence.”
According to Terri Burl, an advocate of the Forest County Potawatomi Domestic Violence Shelter, the IWCHH began the Walks on the Rez campaign and today it includes the 11 Native American tribes of Wisconsin.
Two Native American women (members of the IWCHH) wore blue shawls with purple fringes who represented the FCP and the Lac Courte Oreilles (LCO) Ojibwe communities.
Joe Daniels, an FCP spiritual leader, said a prayer that spoke of understanding and healing for those who have been touched by domestic violence.
People continued to travel to the tent to sign up for the walk throughout the event.
Linda Helmick, FCP Health & Wellness Health Administrator, read a proclamation signed by FCP Tribal Chairman Philip Shopodock and Helmick that stated the Forest County Potawatomi nation is committed to ending the incidence of domestic violence through awareness and prevention education of its staff and community members.
It said: “Whereas, October is designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Health Cares about DV Month, today Oct. 8.
