Laona/Wabeno's boys and Northland Pines girls cross country teams took first place honors at Crandon's invitational meet Thursday afternoon. The Rebels were led by JJ Aschinger and Jake Prasser who crossed the finish line first and second ahead of the 33-member field. Girls winner, Megan Gwyn of Northland Pines, stretched out what was once a short lead over Laona/Wabeno ninth grader Marissa Bartels to break the ribbon first in the girls division.

Run on the Crandon International Raceway grounds, the course took competitors over trails with scenic vistas that, though beautiful, were also rugged and demanding.

"This was a very hard run," Aschinger said, "with all the hills and the wind."

After circling deep into a wooded area, two times for boys doing 5K's, runners climbed a bank near where the mud bog pit was located during the ATV weekend, and they faced a stiff wind during open running near the campground location.

"The boys kicked butt," Laona cross country coach Richard Sorenson said. "The girls team did pretty well, but we lost our third ranking runner before the race."

The Rebels girls finished third behind Northland Pines and a joyful Crandon team. After not defeating the Rebels in any race this season, Sierrah Bocek, Libby Kostelny, and Halee Griffin finished fourth, fifth, and sixth to lead the Cardinals to their second place finish.

"We did good," Crandon coach Jessica Keao said. "We had four medals today, and the girls beat Laona/Wabeno for the first time all year."

The Cardinals fourth medal came in the boys division where Alex Ostrowski toured the course in 20:34 to come in seventh for an individual award. The Crandon boys team with only three runners could not contend for any team awards. The Conserve boys contingent finished second behind the Rebels. Conserve's Richard Fickling placed third behind Aschinger and Prasser, and Dimitry Husen placed fifth.

The start of the girls race resembled a sea of white against the other team's colors. Twenty-seven Northland Pines girls competed. Out of that number, they placed first, third, eighth and ninth with the three Crandon girls and Bartels interrupting their ambitions. Plus, the Rebels Brittany Mischo crossed the line number seven, and Whitney Aschinger arrived in eleventh place.

Wabeno coach John Twardowski said that the Rebels boys finished second at a previous meet in Three Lakes and most recently took first in Lena.

"JJ's been really strong," Twardowski said. "Our boys team is solid. At Lena, in the freshmen division, the girls finished first, second and third."

Bartels, Mischo and Aschinger are all ninth graders, and in a 48-member field in Crandon finished second, seventh and eleventh. A senior, Aschinger said that he was way ahead, by 20 seconds, to win the Lena meet. His margin of victory at Crandon's invitational was 23 seconds. Runners looked forward to the first conference championship in history that was run Tuesday in Conserve.
