Grace E. Adams

Grace E. Adams, age 88, of Wabeno, died at the NuRoc Community Health Care Center in Blackwell on Oct. 3, 2008. Grace was born in Mountain on July 31, 1920 to the late William and Mary (Zahn) Ramsdell.

She married Norris Adams in 1947 and he preceded her in death in 1974.

Grace worked with her husband Norris operating the “Sleepy Hollow Resort” in Townsend for 25 years. After he passed away she was a clerk for Boney’s Red Owl Grocery store in Wabeno for 10 years.

Grace was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Wabeno.

For hobbies, she enjoyed making crafts, gardening, bird watching and crocheting especially angel doillies.

She is survived by her boys, Keith (Christine) Adams of Eagle, Don (Gale) Adams of Brookfield and Ken (Barbara) Adams of Green Bay; six grandchildren, Tammy, Kimberly, Tiffany, Shirley, Sheila and Jenna; and one sister, Pat Uttke of Waupaca.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Bill, Harvey, Pete, Orville and Marvin; and four sisters, Lois, Wilma, Ruth and Eva.

The visitation was on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church. Pastors Dennis and Wendy Mannering were officiating. Interment was in Forest Home Cemetery in Townsend.

Donald James Gilligan, Jr.

Donald James Gilligan, Jr., age 66, of Laona, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008. Don was born in Laona on Feb. 25, 1942, the son of the late Donald James and Gladys (Wood) Gilligan, Sr.

On April 8, 1961 in Laona he married Marie Mann.

Don worked for Connor Lumber Company, Superior Flooring and the Forest County Potawatomi Community. Don was an all around handyman, who liked working on small engines and was always up for a good debate. He loved to spend quality time outdoors, hunting, fishing and bird watching. Don loved to casino hop from Wisconsin to Upper Michigan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He will be sadly missed but not forgotten.

In addition to his parents, Donald and Gladys, he is also preceded in death by two brothers, Kelly and Richard; two sisters, Carol and Leona; and a nephew, Richard.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marie of Laona; daughters, Angela (Mike) Moe of Weston, Danette Gilligan of Wabeno, Jenny Gilligan of Wabeno, Lori (Scott) Cleereman of Cavour, Mary (Charles) Simono of Argonne and Anna (Terry) Gilligan of Crandon; son, Donald (Veronica) Gilligan of Wabeno; sisters, Germaine (John) Murray of Laona, Ginny (Delmar) Hernning of Lena, Ruth (Delmar) Behnke of Lena and Laurie (Richard) Comins of Lena; brothers, Tom (Kathy) Gilligan of Crivitz and Dan (Sharron) Gilligan of Lena; sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 from 11 a.m. until noon at the Weber-Hill Funeral Home in Crandon. Funeral services followed at noon with Pastor Bill Farr officiating.

Delbert R. “Del” Bowling

Delbert R. “Del” Bowling, a lifelong resident of Laona, passed away at the Friendly Village Health Care Center of Rhinelander on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 at the age of 87. Del was born in Laona on March 14, 1921, the son of the late Henderson and Emma (Rossman) Bowling.

Del served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Oct. 11, 1947 in Laona he married Mary Majnarich.

Del was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Laona; sons, John Bowling of Orland Park, Ill. and Russ (Kelli) Bowling of Sturgeon Bay; and grandson, John Bowling, Jr. of Baltimore, Md.

In addition to his parents, Henderson and Emma, he is also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Visitation was held on Friday, Oct. 3 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Laona. Funeral service followed at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dennis Mannering and Pastor Wendy Mannering officiating. Interment was at the Laona Cemetery. Weber-Hill Funeral Home of Crandon assisted the family with arrangements.

Shelby O. “Sonny” Eveland

Shelby O. “Sonny” Eveland, age 77, died Sept. 30, 2008. He was born May 16, 1931 to Shalby and Hazel “Bell” Eveland in Crandon. He attended school in Crandon, graduating high school class of 1949.

He served in the Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954.

He married Joellen R. “Ginger” Ford in 1952. They lived in Bisbee, Ariz. and Marysville, Calif. while he was in the military. They moved back to Wisconsin and he was employed at Rhinelander Paper Company. They moved to Longview, Wash. for the start-up of R.W. Paper Company as a shipping superintendent.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Eugene; and son, David.

Shelby loved his wife and spending time with his family. He liked to share walks at the lake with his wife, travel, garden, fish and play guitar.

Survivors are his wife, Joellen “Ginger”; son, Michael (Cindy) Eveland; daughter, Susan and son-in-law, Danny Gallagher; daughter, Sharon Eveland; and two brothers, Ronald (Bernie) Eveland and James (Charlene) Eveland of Wisconsin. He had seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park. Viewing was Friday from noon to 6 p.m. Private entombment took place at Longview Memorial Park. Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.

Marilee Meyer

Marilee Meyer, age 67, of Wabeno (Carter), formerly of Racine, died unexpectedly on Sept. 28, 2008 at her home.

She was born in Balkan Township, Minn. on July 28, 1941 to the late Albert and Laura (Soderberg) Kmett. She graduated from UW-Stout with a degree in Home Economics. It is here where she met her husband, John Meyer, whom she married on Sept. 1, 1962.

Marilee was a dedicated homemaker sharing her skills as a seamstress, cook and baker with her family and numerous friends.

While taking care of her home and family, she also was a substitute high school teacher for the Racine Unified school district for 33 years.

Marilee had numerous other talents and interests which included painting, creating small crafts, playing the piano, gardening, camping, playing cards and crocheting.

She was faith-filled woman participating in several “Walks to Emmaus” and volunteering for a mission project to build a church for the Blackfoot Indians. However, she will be best remembered for her gregarious personality and generous spirit which was expressed by befriending numerous people wherever she lived, sending them birthday cards, carrying on long telephone conversations with them or visiting them when they were sick or living in a nursing home.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, John; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas (Tammy) Meyer of Lakewood; one daughter and son-in-law, Dana (Shawn) Griffin of Liberty Township, Ohio; one brother, Ronald (Beverly) Kmett of Cook, Minn.; two sisters, Sheryl Enrico of Bloomington, Minn. and Laurel (Doug) Syverson of Blaine, Minn.; three grandchildren, Alexandra, Katherine and Samuel Griffin; and three step-grandchildren, Steven, Matthew and Carly Fountain. She is also survived by numerous friends.

Marilee was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Arlene Nichols; and one brother, Alan Kmett.

The visitation was on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Wabeno from noon until 3 p.m. The funeral service was at 3 p.m., conducted by Pastor Dennis Larson. Food and fellowship followed the service in the church basement. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Carter at a later date.

Honoring Marilee as pallbearers were Steve Nichols, Doug Meyer, Bob Nichols, Michael Kmett, Todd Meyer and Danny Meyer and as honorary pallbearer, Samuel Griffin.

The family will share memorials with the Cancer Research Institute and the Disabled American Vets.

Timothy Allen Edwards

Timothy Allen Edwards, age 40, of Iron River, Mich., died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at Iron County Community Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born May 8, 1968, the son of the late Ira Biddell Jr. He attended school in St. Paul, Minn., where he graduated and went on to Montana where he graduated with a degree in auto mechanics.

He married Terri Lynn Fox on Aug. 28, 2008 in Iron River, Mich., and the couple made their home in Iron River.

Tim was a self-employed construction worker and enjoyed restoring antique cars and loved drawing and doing artwork, traveling and antiquing. He was also an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ira Biddell Jr.; sister, Lisa A. Pacala; and one brother, Justice Biddell.

He is survived by his wife, Terri Lynn Edwards of Iron River; mother, Jeanette George of Iron River; one daughter, Janessa Edwards of Keshena; three brothers, Ernest Edwards Jr. of Iron Mountain, Mich., Brian Jay Edwards of Milwaukee and Chad Anthony Smith of Iron River, Mich.; six sisters, Thelma M. Johnson of Crandon, Theresa L. Johnson of Crandon, Georgina Rank of West Keys, Fla., Sue Lavonne Strugalla of Crandon, Cheryl A. Edwards of Rhinelander and Johanna Edwards of Milwaukee; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River from 4 until 8 p.m. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at Lake Lucerne Gospel Chapel in Stone Lake. A funeral feast was held at noon followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. with Pastor Rick and Carol Mokry officiating.

Interment will be at Stone Lake Cemetery in Stone Lake.

The family suggests memorial donations for Timothy to the Iron County Cancer Unit.
