The staff at the Ministry Medical Center in Crandon recently began a program that they hope will help to inform the public about health related issues in the area and offer a forum where the community can ask health care professionals questions and talk with other community members with the same concerns.

The first Community Chat gathering was held Sept. 16 in the Crandon Ministry Medical facility and focused on the topic of dealing with tragedy and grief in light of the upcoming one year anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2007 shootings. While only a few attended the first program, Ann Wied, the clinic manager, is hopeful that more will attend the next one on Sept. 14, which will focus on MRSA or Methicillin Resistant Staphyloccus Aureus, which is a common bacteria that is highly resistant to antibiotics. Personnel from the Ministry Infection Control Department will be on hand to answer questions about ways to avoid becoming infected with MRSA.

Wied said that the staff strives to pick topics that are pertinent to the community, but would like to have input from the community on other topics that are of interest to them. Currently, programs on smoking (Nov. 18) and weight management (Jan. 20) are planned. Suggestions can be brought to the attention of the Crandon Ministry Medical office at (715) 478-3318.

“We hope the education we bring to the community helps,” said Wied. She added that the programs also offer a place for people to meet and talk once a month.

Community Chats will be held every third Tuesday of the month (except December) through April in the lobby of the Crandon Ministry Medical building at 5:30 p.m. The programs should last about an hour and are free and open to the public.
