To the Community:

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year 39 ribbons are displayed on the lampposts along Lake Avenue in Crandon. These ribbons represent the number of domestic abuse related homicide victims in Wisconsin during 2007. We also want to honor and remember our young people who died last year on Oct. 7, 2007. There are six lavender ribbons to specially honor those victims. Our hope is that people in our communities will realize that domestic violence is a real problem—and our fervent desire that the work to end domestic violence can help prevent another tragedy from happening in our “peaceful Northwood’s.”

Another symbol that will be displayed is purple puzzle pieces. It’s important that every person in the community is committed to become a piece of the puzzle to end domestic violence. Display a puzzle piece pin or a purple ribbon to show your commitment to ending this abuse. We also ask that you say the following pledge as a reminder that you will be part of the solution to this pervasive problem.

I choose to respect, listen to and seek equality in every relationship.

I will not be silent about the effect that family or relationship violence has on my community.

I will not condone acts of violence in family or personal relationships.

I will not commit acts of violence in family or personal relationships.

You may not think that any of this applies to you or your family. But if we continue to tolerate abusive behavior in our community, it is as if it the abuse is happening in our own family. Remember that it is normal for people to feel angry but it is important to express that anger in ways that do not involve hurting or scaring anyone. There are healthy ways and outlets to express anger, for children as well as for adults. If you would like more information or help for abuse that is affecting you or someone you love, please contact Tri-County Council at 478-3780 or our hot line at 1-800-236-1222. You really can make a difference.

GREEN BAY — As it turned out Aaron Rodgers’ shoulder wasn’t the difference on Sunday. Instead, it was one poor decision that turned out to be the game’s biggest play, as a fourth-quarter interception in Green Bay territory and the ensuing touchdown led to the Packers’ dropping a decision to the upstart Atlanta Falcons 27-24 at Lambeau Field.
