News : Colorama coming into full swing
Marion Soch - Correspondent
(Popple River News) - Autumn has arrived! It is beautiful with the colorama coming into full swing very soon. I think the colorama will be different this year from normal, as I notice our maple trees usually are orangy looking, but this year some are very red...beautiful! The yellow pine needles are dropping with the wind, which means we will be raking those along with the early falling leaves soon. Time to get our exercise to stay physically fit!
Talking about pine needles, someone mentioned awhile ago that they notice the pine trees are turning yellow and thought to be dying, so I clued them in that the old growth dies off after a few years, turns yellow and falls to the ground, as leaves do in deciduous trees. Thus the accumulation of pine needles below the pine trees in the forest. Wow, now I feel like a teacher!
Now that it is apple season, I must share this recipe with you for apple juice, which is so simple to make. Windfalls can be used and the bruises do not have to be cut out. All you need is a five gallon pail full of apples, boiling water, cream of tartar, a plate and something to weigh down the apples in the pail.
Wash the apples, quarter them and fill the pail to top with the cut apples. Sprinkle 1/2 cup cream of tartar over the apples and pour the boiling water over to cover the apples. Place a plate over the top of apples and weigh down with a washed rock or a gallon jar or jug filled with water. Let set 24 hours. I have let them set for 1-1/2 to two days and they are fine. Strain the juice through a kitchen colander and discard apples. Then strain the juice through a cheesecloth. Bring the juice to boiling and add about 1/4 cup sugar or splenda (to taste) per quart. I taste the juice to see how rich the flavor is. I add water to the batch if it is very full flavored.
Fill the sterile quart jars to within 1/2 inch from the top, top with the two-piece metal lids and turn just snug, put in the hot water bath to cover jars and boil slowly for ten minutes. Remove jars from bath and cool. Yield is about seven quarts. Now wasn't that easy?
Visitors to the Northwoods this week were, Al Reinhard, the Jack Stickas, Tom Van Boxel, the Puhls, the Jeff Andrews gang, Walkers, Gordy and Ruth Mueller, Larry Van Boxel and Lynn, Buddy and Sue Wright, Paul and Vergil Schultz, the Zernzachs and Queenie, the horse, and Dan and Peggy Gerlikovski.
The Gerlikovski's reported seeing a sow and two cubs while ATV'ing on their land. She raised up on her hind legs, so Dan stood up in the ATV to look and the sow lowered down to all fours and the sow walked away with her cubs. Neat! but scarry!
The harvest of bear and deer has been accumulating in numbers. The bear harvest this week was four to total 31 thus far. The deer harvest this week was six bucks and five doe with a total of 13 thus far into the hunt. A couple of the bucks were 8 and 9 pointers. Congratulations to the successful hunters.
Have a safe week and enjoy the beautiful fall weather and exploding colorama.
