Local Red Cross volunteers respond to federal disaster areas across South
The American Red Cross has deployed over 5,600 Red Cross volunteers to the Gulf Coast states, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. Red Cross volunteers are working on multiple activities in different places. The Red Cross is setting up shelters and food kitchens throughout the damage affected areas. Meals are being delivered into neighborhoods and to shelters. As of early September, over 57,000 people sought refuge at Red Cross shelters. With more storms coming, additional volunteers are being called out.
David Renaud of Merrill left for Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sept. 4. He is assigned to disaster assessment in the area. William Miller of Rhinelander departed on Sept. 6 to Orlando, Florida, where he will work at a Red Cross shelter in the area. Miller and Renaud will be gone for three weeks working as Red Cross volunteers.
Members of the local Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) are volunteers specially trained by the local chapter in various aspects of disaster response such as: Client casework, disaster assessment, and mass care to name a few. Persons interested in volunteering for the American Red Cross DAT program should contact the Red Cross at (715) 344-4052.

Three of us who just returned from a trip to the state of Minnesota spell it “frustration!” For several years we have been listening to the fish stories told by members of the musky fraternity who have returned from a fishing trip to one of the large Minnesota musky lakes. Those stories about huge muskies, which have not received much fishing pressure, caught our attention. A trip was in the planning stages for some time. READ MORE >
