(Wabeno News) - Hi everybody.

I was downtown Friday late afternoon and saw that the new sidewalk was in from the bandshell to the Legion Hall. What a great job they have done. They replaced the sidewalk to the museum too, so now it is handicap accessible. Super!

While I was checking that out, I saw Willard and Paul Ehlinger putting cedar shingles on the roof of the new port they built over the huge logs that are on the sled behind the Phoenix Log Hauler. What a nice job they have done. I had stopped to ask Willard a question but he couldn’t hear as they were cutting the slots in the sidewalk I figured they might be faking a little, not hearing. I thought Paul could hear anyway. I knew that Willard was a bit hard of hearing so I shouted louder, “do you guys want me to buy you a beer and bring it here?” They didn’t answer. I started to laugh, as I knew then that they really couldn’t hear me.

The sidewalk was put in by PM Concrete and paid for by the town. The Port over the Logs well that is something else. The structure is built with the trees that were blown down during the tornado that hit the town a year ago this past July. There was a pine tree on each side of the band shell and the other tree blown down was between the Library and the Old School House. These trees were then cut up and timbers sawed into lumber at Willard’s son Pete’s sawmill. Can you imagine these trees are what they using to build the port? The shakes they’re using for the roof are those that are cut every year by Willard with the old shake cutter during the Steam-Up Days. Nothing at this point has cost the town anything. Their time, their energy, their days off and their dedication to the town. Doesn’t that make you feel good and proud of the people in this town. Gotta go for now.

Don’t you just love this place? I do!
