Northern Elite Predators

It’s football season again and on Wednesday, August 20 in the high school gym in Niagara, it was time to “meet the Predators!” Coach Dan St. Arnold introduced this year’s Northern Elite Predators team. This season is sure to be bittersweet as St. Arnold begins his last year of coaching after 29 years. He said that he treats all of his players as his own sons and has always taught them to play hard, and be respectful both on and off the field. It is indeed a unique talent to be able to “conjure animosity” while at the same time upholding respect.

He had a message to the parents of seniors, to take in every moment because it goes by fast and when it’s over, encourage your sons to leave, some may come back, some may not, but they will all realize how good we have it here. That is sure to be proven at the homecoming game that will be played in Goodman on Saturday, September 27. Mark your calendars! You don’t want to miss it! St. Arnold does not guarantee that they will always win, but he does guarantee that they will play hard. Parents’ night will be held on Thursday, August 28 in Niagara. Parents of the players will be introduced at 5:30 p.m. before the Predators prepare to take the field in the first game of the season against Tigerton. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.

Caramel Candy Bars

These would be great for the game! They are an irresistible combination of caramel, chocolate and nuts! These delicious bars go great with a cup of coffee, hot cocoa or apple cider.

1 (14 ounce) package caramels

1/3 cup milk

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats

1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 egg

1 cup butter, softened

1 (6 ounce) package semisweet chocolate chips

1 cup walnuts or dry-roasted peanuts

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches. Heat caramels and milk in 2-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently, until smooth. Stir together flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, salt and egg in large bowl. Stir in butter with fork until mixture is crumbly. Press half of the crumbly mixture in pan. Bake 10 minutes. Sprinkle chocolate chips and walnuts over baked layer. Drizzle with caramel mixture. Sprinkle with remaining crumbly mixture. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 30 minutes. Loosen edges from sides of pan; cool completely. For 54 bars, cut into 9 rows by 6 rows.
