The Mole Lake Sokaogon Chippewa Community recently provided $10,000 to the Lake Metonga Association to help control Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM), an invasive plant found in Lake Metonga.

The Tribe received funding from a Tribal grant program offered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA). Traditionally this program is only for projects on Tribal lands; however, this project was approved due to the documented long-term relationship between the Tribe and the Association and because of the importance of Lake Metonga to the local community. Lake Metonga is a valuable economic resource to the community as it attracts tourists and visitors throughout the year.

In May 2008, the Association chemically treated 50.2 acres of EWM at a cost of $35,911. The cost per acre to treat this aquatic plant is extremely expensive. The long-term management goal of treatment efforts is to control EWM and reduce its spread to other lakes. The Association is closely monitoring EWM and the aquatic plant community in Lake Metonga, with additional chemical treatment planned for three more years.

The Lake Metonga Association especially showed their gratitude to the Sokaogon Chippewa Tribal Chairman, Arlyn Ackley, Sr., the Tribal Council and Tribal Community for their financial support. They also thank Mike Preul, Tribal Fisheries Biologist, and Julie Malvitz, District Conservationist for NRCS in facilitating this project. Their assistance helps to maintain the quality of Lake Metonga waters for use by the community and its visitors.
