Gentlemen, you need not read this article. Women, if you are interested in Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW), Treehaven is the place for you and Aug. 22-24 are the important dates this summer.

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) is an award winning outdoors skills program. Workshops teach introductory hunting and shooting, fishing and other outdoor activities like camping and canoeing in a supportive environment.

The weekend-long workshops offer over 20 different activities including firearm safety, basic fishing, fly fishing, camping, shotgun, rifle, bowhunting and archery, outdoor cooking, canoeing, map and compass, survival and more.

Registration is still open. Workshop activities are balanced between hunting and shooting, fishing and boating, and non-consumptive activities like camping and canoeing. The workshops are designed primarily for women as learning opportunities for anyone 18 years of age and older.

Perhaps you’ve never tried one of theses activities but have hoped for an opportunity to learn. Maybe you’re a beginner who wants to improve your skills. You may know how to do some of these activities but would like to try your hand at new ones. Or maybe you enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

Class choices include: Firearm Safety and Handling, Fly Tying, Canoeing, Archery, Basic GPS, Sewing with Fur, Beginning Shotgun, Rifle Markswoman and Wildlife Habitat.

Participants can learn how to pursue one of Wisconsin’s most popular sport fish in Bass Fishing 101 or take a “quick start” course from the American Canoe Association that will earn you a beginning kayak certification. Women can also learn to fish like Brad Pitt in the movie A River Runs Through It, learn strategies for staying unlost as well as what to do to survive for 48 hours if lost in Outdoor Survival Basics.

Take campfire grilling to a whole new level in Campfire Grilling. Bring comfortable walking shoes and binoculars to learn the difference between warblers and thrushes in Birding. Gain confidence to go boating without having to have someone else back the trailer in Boat Handling.

The workshop fee with on-site lodging is $279, which includes two nights lodging at Treehaven and seven meals. For more information, call Treehaven at (715) 453-4106 or go online at www.uwsp.edu/cnr/treehaven.

Participants can earn their hunter safety certification or college credits at these workshops.
