(Hiles News) - July seems to get busier and busier every year up here in the Northwoods. There are so many craft fairs and celebrations, not to mention reunions and picnics. August is usually a much more laid back month. No national holidays. Families start to think about school starting up. Time to get back at those projects we were going to get done this summer. There’s berry picking, gardens are producing and we will soon see the first twinges of color in the trees. But there’s still plenty of time to relax and enjoy the summer. Don’t forget that the Summer Olympic Games start on August 8, too.

Farewell, Friend

Those who knew him were saddened by the sudden death of “Harley Bob” Huber, 60, last week in a freak accident. A passing car blew a tire and the vehicle veered into Bob’s motorcycle, causing his death.

He was a motorcycle mechanic by trade, a job he was expert at, and the man others called on when they couldn’t figure out a problem with a motor.

He loved to be in Hiles, where he had a vacation home, with the basement done up in hunting lodge style. In fact, he was on his way to Hiles when the accident occurred.

His friends “up north” will fondly remember him as an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. If you had a pesky raccoon causing damage to your yard or garden he was the “go-to guy”; he’d come and set up his live trap to get the pest out of your way. He was thoughtful and generous to everyone. He even took time to clip cartoons from his daily paper about Red Hatters and send or bring them up for the Hiles Red Hatters. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Leroy Butler Weekend a Success

Hiles and surrounding area was a busy place for the weekend, with all the activities for the fund raiser for the Breast Cancer Fund headed by former Green Bay Packer great, Leroy Butler. Joan Ferris of Hiles Pine Lake Campground was the organizer of the events, and she was ably aided by Jennifer Nery and many others. Area folks did their part with donations and attendance at the events. The effort raised $10,000, with some expenses still to be paid. We certainly can applaud people like Joan and Bill Ferris and Jennifer Nery for doing so much work to help raise money for important charities like this. Thank you, everyone who had a part in this project.

Calendar and Almanac

August is Happiness Happens Month, National Inventor’s Month and What Will Be Your Legacy Month, among others.

The first week of August is Simplify Your Life Week. Don’t we all want to do that!

Just a few of the designations for the first few days in August are these:

August 1 — Respect for Parents Day, Work Like a Dog Day and World Wide Web Day

August 4 — National Chocolate Chip Day

August 5 — National Night Out

August 7 — 1 p.m. Hiles Service Club, at the museum

August 7 – 6:30 p.m. Red Hatters meet at Pine Lake Pub

Celebrate Chocolate Chip Day with Summer Fruits in Chocolate Fondue

Chocolate Orange Fondue

1/2 cup undiluted evaporated milk or light cream

2 cups (12 ounce package) semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup honey

1/4 cup butter or margarine

1 teaspoon grated orange peel

2 teaspoons fresh orange juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine evaporated milk or cream, chocolate, honey and butter in fondue pot or a heavy saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Add remaining ingredients. Keep warm over low heat of fondue burner as you start dipping your favorite treats, including strawberries, bananas, other assorted fruit, French bread, angel food cake chunks, etc.

Chocolate Marshmallow Fondue

6 ounces chocolate chips

1/2 cup miniature marshmallows

1/3 cup whipping cream

1 tablespoon grated orange peel

2 tablespoon fresh orange juice

Combine all ingredients in a fondue pot or small heavy pot. Cook over low heat and stir until chocolate has melted and everything is thoroughly combined.

Begin dipping fruit or other treats into fondue.
