(Argonne News) - Argonne Days is almost here. Put Saturday, August 9 on your calendar as it is the biggest day in Argonne.

A parade with lots of local talent, all organized and put on by our very efficient fire department will be featured.

The fire department serves good food at a reasonable price, all we can afford right after the parade. Kid’s games with money as prizes will also be held so the children can buy a little extra at the food booth.

Games of sack racing, wheelbarrow racing and greased pole are among some favorites, as well as the watermelon eating contest and the greased pig contest.

With a dance and lots of visiting to end the day, what more could you ask for? I hope to see you there.

A shower was held for Tara Van Cleve at the town hall. Tara is the daughter of Bob and Sara Van Cleve and granddaughter of Ken and Marion Keepers. She will be marrying Arleigh Yaeger of Laona in August.

Harold and I motored to Green Bay on Friday to attend the graduation party of Mary Folish, great-granddaughter of sister Carol Krueger and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Folish.

There were a lot of branches and tree limbs in our yard when we got back. The windstorm was pretty strong Friday night.

Argonne also has some very talented race drivers. Well known is Jeff Kincaid, high point driver of his famous Toyota truck, and Todd Bress, who races in Eagle River every week. He can be seen on Channel 12 during the sports updates. The Baldwin family have a shop in Argonne and also race in Nevada and California.

For a small town, we have two great places to eat. Kathy’s Inn serves good breakfasts and Ed’s has the best ribs and his Argonne burger is famous. I see a lot of people from Crandon there, enjoying the great cuisine.

Happy birthday to all in July. If you call me, I will put your special events in the paper. If you don’t call or I don’t get it right, call me anyway at (715) 649-3808.

All the farmers are getting their hay put up. Keepers, Packards and McKeagues’ fields south of Argonne are all very bare but green.

I got a call from sister Angeline (Kido) Knapke of Deerbrook to tell me her daughter Angie and Jim Remington of Gleason had a touchdown of a tornado. It uprooted trees, destroyed a new shed and one of the trees fell on her car. It sure is a bad year for storms. Angie and Jim, have faith, your luck will change soon.

Rodgers the man for Packers
GREEN BAY — If exasperation had a face, it would be Mike McCarthy from Saturday’s introductory training camp press conference. Suffering through a 32-minute interview in which 48 of 61 questions were centered on the Brett Favre drama, the 3rd-year coach repeatedly endorsed Aaron Rodgers as the Packers starter and admitted that the past month has been the toughest situation he has had to deal with in coaching.
