Trial date set for Van Meter
By Daily News Staff
A rural Rhinelander man accused of concocting a false story about being shot by two men in the woods will go on trial next month as planned.
According to computerized court records, a judge on Wednesday denied a request from the state to postpone the trial of John “Homer” Van Meter which is scheduled to begin Aug. 5.
The defense opposed the motion to reschedule. Van Meter’s trial has already been postponed several times.
Van Meter, 53, is accused of knowingly providing false information to Lincoln County officers investigating a shooting incident, according to a criminal complaint filed Sept. 7, 2006.
In April 2006, Van Meter told police two men (including a one-armed man) shot him without provocation while he was logging in the woods near Tomahawk.
In an interview with The Daily News shortly after the alleged shooting incident, Van Meter said he recognized the men from a previous encounter and that they were committing a crime. However, he refused to elaborate on their identities and refused to share that information with sheriff’s investigators.
After two months of investigation, authorities determined that Van Meter’s story of a shooting in the woods was a hoax and the Lincoln County District Attorney charged him with two misdemeanor obstruction charges.
Van Meter has continued to claim that he is innocent.
He has been free on $1,000 cash bond since October 2006.
