Community : Nature’s sprinkling systems keeps lawns green
Pat Pfeiffer - Correspondent
(Hiles News) - Note to our friends in the city:
Nature’s own sprinkling system has been keeping everyone’s lawn, and the woods, green and growing. Hiles is so green now! We have been told that green is a relaxing color, and the air moving through the trees puts more oxygen into the air which is very good for us. So if you want to relax and refresh your spirit, come on up to Hiles. I think you will feel a lot better!
Red Hatters get Behind-the-Scene View
Last week the Hiles Hattitude group had a great time touring the WJFW-TV Channel 12 studio. They enjoyed it immensely. The people we see on Channel 12 News telecasts are good looking, but in person they are even more handsome and beautiful. And they are so personable and friendly and willing to answer all your questions about how it all gets on TV out to our home TV screens.
The ladies were all fascinated by what goes on behind the cameras. It was amazing to see how the whole thing runs like clockwork. They left with a greater appreciation of the local news and the Channel 12 Team.
After the tour the ladies enjoyed a delicious and relaxing dinner at Holiday Haven on the shore of Lake Thompson near Rhinelander in their Three Coins Dinning Room. Besides the excellent food, they also savored the unique Turn of the Century gift shop on the premises.
Trap Shoot Fun
The Hiles Fire Department was blessed with great summer weather for their trap shoot last weekend. The crowd was good, and the prizes were plentiful. Winners of the ticket raffle included $250 for Laurie Shampo, $150 for T.J. Becker, $150 for Luke Bukovic and $75 and Dean Shremka won $25. Chuck Hutter won the shotgun. Nancy Bochte won the trail camera. Many smaller prizes were won, also, making for a lot of fun throughout the day.
Playground Fund Growing
The Playground Improvement Committee has raised about $1,000 with fund raisers and with the money from the aluminum can collection. But the fund recently received a huge shot-in-the-arm in the form of a $2,000 donation from a business that has chosen to remain anonymous. This is great news for the kids of Hiles, and will greatly help toward making improvements. The can collection bin is getting full, too, and the ‘can man’ will soon be called to buy the cans.
If you have been saving up your beer and soda cans they can be bagged and added to the collection bin at any time. The bin is located near the playground by the town garage in the middle of town. More fundraisers are being planned, so watch for news of them to come.
How’s Your Garden Growing?
Fresh cucumbers may be one of the best reasons to have your own garden. They are so much better tasting than the mass produced ones available in the super markets. A lot of vegetables, maybe all of them, are better from our own gardens. They benefit us not only in the eating, but also in the exercise we get gardening. Here is a simple and good recipe for fresh cucumbers.
Dilled Cucumber Salad
2 lg. cucumbers, peeled & sliced
1 tsp. salt
1 med. green pepper, chopped
2 or 3 green onions, sliced (or 1/4 c. white chopped onion)
1 tbsp. parsley, chopped
1/3 c. white vinegar
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. dill weed
Sprinkle sliced cucumbers with salt in medium bowl. Let stand 20 minutes. Rinse cucumbers well and pat dry with paper towel. Mix with pepper, onion and parsley. Combine the rest of the ingredients and pour over cucumbers. Cover and chill two to four hours or overnight. Cherry tomatoes would make a pretty garnish for this salad. 8 servings.
Calendar and Almanac
The July full moon which was the 18th, last week, was called the Buck Moon, because at this time of the year the buck deer are getting their new antlers. It is also called the Thunder Moon because it is a time of summer storms.
This week is Make Someone Smile Week. Sounds like a good goal for every week and every day!
July 23 – Gorgeous Grandma Day
July 26 – National Cowboy Day
Next weekend – the fund raiser for Leroy Butler’s Breast Cancer Fund Activities. If you have any questions about the schedule you can call Joan Ferris 649-3319 or Jennifer Nery at 649-3263.
