Sports : Tug of war kicks off Steam Up Days
Vern Hollister - Correspondent
Kicking off Wabeno's Steam-Up Days, defending champion Tony's Cronies retained their crown in the second annual Pichotta's Tug of War competition. To do so, the Redi-Mix pullers needed to come from one loss down to defeat Jim Smith's Concrete, brother against brother, in two consecutive pulls at the firefighter grounds. Harris Tree Service finished in third place.
The double elimination competition, instead of being spread over two days as initially planned, was completed Friday evening. Seven teams entered, fewer than anticipated; and shortly after seven o'clock they began facing off on each side of the mud hole.
For their efforts, Tony's Redi-Mix took home $200, Jim's Concrete $100 and Harris $50. Brian Pichotta, representing Pichotta's Pub, awarded the cash.
Jim Smith's team handed Tony's their first loss in two years in a semi-final round, but their cheers diminished three pulls later. Tony's with one loss and Harris Tree Service with one defeat met at the opposite ends of the rope with Richard Rummel and Larry Rummel calling the action and lining up the pullers.
After Tony's defeated the Harris team and "pull" caller Cheryl Ehlinger, the brothers Tony and Jim each led his team to the battle area. Tony's Cronies needed to win twice for the championship. Two consecutive victories later, the Redi-Mix bunch wrapped up a second championship.
The Rummels were willing to give the teams extra time before the last pull, but raring to go and to finish, both teams came forward with a "Let's do it," attitude. They did switch sides at the offer from the officials and at the Jim Smith's team's request, but all that did was to rile up the Tony's Cronies anchor.
With the Tug of War completed Friday evening, Steam-Up sports enthusiasts could concentrate on the horseshoe tournament scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.
