News : Re-enactor to present at logging camp museum
The glory days of logging and lumberjacks will come alive once again on Wednesday, July 23 at the Holt and Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood. Highly acclaimed re-enactor Christopher Goetz will make two presentations that day. The afternoon program, during which Goetz will impersonate a logging camp cook, starts at 2 p.m. and the evening program repeats at 6:30 p.m. Guided tours of the museum will be available starting at 1:30 p.m. that day.
The museum is located on County F outside of Lakewood on the McCauslin Brook Golf Country Club grounds. Admission to this fundraiser is a requested donation of $5 per person or $20 per family. Each paid admission qualifies the visitor for a chance to win a signed hardcover copy of “The Truth About Townsend, Volume I: Transforming the Northwoods” by Kathleen Marie Marsh.
If you are unable to make Goetz’s presentation, the museum will be open every Saturday this summer from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular Saturday admission is a $2 donation for adults; children twelve and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Each Saturday includes a short presentation, with a question and answer session at 1 p.m. Group tours are also available. To schedule, call (715) 276-6515.
Erected in 1881, the Holt and Balcom Logging Camp Museum is the oldest surviving such camp in the United States still standing in its original location. All monies raised will be used for restoration of the museum, which needs extensive repairs. If you have already toured the camp, you know what a priceless treasure the site contains. If not, be sure to put a museum visit on your summer planning calendar.
Private donations for museum restoration are being sought and are greatly appreciated. Checks payable to the Oconto Historical Society qualify as a tax-deductible, charitable contribution. Send your contribution, (write Logging Camp on the memo line) to the Oconto Historical Society; 917 Park Avenue; Oconto, WI 54153.
