News : Some hot, but dry weather

(Popple River News) - Wasn't it a great week? Some hot weather to enjoy swimming and some cool weather to enjoy gardening and outdoor chores. It has been a very dry week again for Popple River with only .05 inch of rain, while others around us have been getting much more. We were hopeful for more rain when the storm passed through over the weekend, as it looked promising on the weather map, but to no avail in Popple River. The windy days are taking so much moisture out of the ground, leaving it very dry. Hopefully, we will get some this week.

Upon reading the Tuesday issue of the Green Bay Press Gazette, I noticed that one of our former cabin owners passed away on Sunday, July 6, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Orville Rasmussen was 91 having lived a healthy fulfilled life with his wife Esther and their eight children. They came to their cabin (the one Jim Baltus had) for many years on a regular basis and they enjoyed fishing the area lakes. One time they showed us a photo of the crew standing around the cabin in their hunting clothes, but there was a boat in the photo. Then we realized it was the opening weekend of fishing season, the year we were dumped on with about nine inches of snow!

Dale Neumeier and wife of Kewaunee, stopped by on Friday on their way to their cabin on Howen Road to say "Hello" and advise us that one of their group that came to Popple River to the Classon cabin years ago, had passed away this past week. R.C. Harrell was a regular visitor at that time and enjoyed coming to this area. He was 79. We have fond memories of these folks and our condolences go out to the families of these deceased persons.

Pat Flannigan of Appleton was here again at his cabin doing some landscaping work on the property. We could hear the machine humming away all afternoon Saturday.

Joe Kraemer of Oconomowoc is at his vacation home for a few days.

Peggy and Dan Gerlikovski enjoyed their ride to their cabin from Green Bay on their Harley and stayed a few days. Nice weather for riding, although a bit windy.

Agnes Miller was at her place over the weekend and visited folks (who she could find home). We had a good visit with her on Saturday afternoon enlightening us on updates of her life. Her son, Tim and family of Kyle, Texas were in the Northwoods for a vacation, first at Conover and then Tim and kids came to the cabin to ride their woods and enjoy the ATV's. It is always great to see Agnes when she comes up, as we do miss her as a resident.

We talked about the John Dillinger movie being made in part in the Northwoods and Oshkosh, and of course, she has stories to tell about John Dillinger, as he was in her neighborhood where she lived in Chicago as a child. He was good to kids and always gave them a quarter, which in those hard times, was enough to put some food on the table, seeing Agnes had four siblings.

Agnes also told of the ladies of the neighborhood going to the telephone (or light) pole against which John D. collapsed and died, thus releasing his blood on it, of which the ladies chipped pieces of the stains from the pole as a "remembrance" of John. I can picture this, but it surely sounds funny. There were other stories, too, which I am sure will not be in the movie.

Have a great week.
