(Hiles News) - What a gorgeous Independence Day weekend! It was great to see so many people enjoying the weather and the holiday. I think we finally got the nice days we have been waiting for! “Up North” is a great place to be for summer holidays.

Service Club Plans for Trap Shoot Food

The Hiles Service Club met last Thursday to plan for the food they will be serving at the Hiles Fire Department’s Trap Shoot. This is coming up on Saturday, July 19.

They also got a look at the comments from the vendors at the Craft Show last month, and nearly all of them said they would be back next year. There were a lot of good ideas for improving next year’s craft show. The Service Club will get into the plans for the future of that event at upcoming meetings.

The can bin down by the town garage is getting full. If you have cans to donate, bag them up and toss them into the bin. The can-man will be called to pick them up again soon. This year’s collection is going to the playground improvement committee. Remember that this is the only aluminum can collection in Hiles that is going to a good cause.

Red Hatters Ready for Fun

The Red Hatters met last Thursday and heard plans for July’s outing. The plan, put forth by July’s hostesses, Darlene Wolf and Pat Pfeiffer, is to take a tour of WFRV, Channel 12’s studios in Rhinelander. They will be able to watch the five o’clock news show being telecast. After the tour they will be going to dine at a Rhinelander supper club. The date picked for this excursion is Tuesday, July 15. Final plans are being made and members will be contacted with the details. If there is any lady in the area that would like to be included that has not been a member before, she should call Pat at 649-3568.

Strawberry Time

You probably have your favorite way to eat them, but here’s a new taste to try. The balsamic vinegar brings out the berries' beautiful color and truly enhances their flavor. Great served with a simple pound cake, over vanilla ice cream, or just by themselves. They would make a good salad tossed with fresh spinach leaves and a few red onion slices.

Strawberries with Balsamic Vinegar

6 servings

16 ounces fresh strawberries, hulled and large berries cut in half

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1/4 cup white sugar

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste

Place strawberries in a bowl. Drizzle vinegar over strawberries, and sprinkle with sugar. Stir gently to combine. Cover, and let sit at room temperature for at least 1 hour but not more than 4 hours. Just before serving, grind pepper over berries.

Proud to be an American

The Fourth of July was, of course, the birthday of our nation. There have been so many great quotes by fine patriots, and I include just a few of them here. I hope we never forget how blessed we are to be living in this great country, and I go along with John Wayne in admitting to being proud to wave her flag.

"Sure I wave the American flag. Do you know a better flag to wave? Sure I love my country with all her faults. I'm not ashamed of that, never have been, never will be." - John Wayne

"And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free, and I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me and I'll proudly stand up next to him to defend her still today, cuz there ain’t no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA" - Lee Greenwood, Proud To Be An American

"I venture to suggest that patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime." - Adali Stevenson

"Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return." - Colin Powell

"Our citizenship in the United States is our national character. Our citizenship in any particular state is only our local distinction. By the latter we are known at home, by the former to the world. Our great title is AMERICANS " - Thomas Paine

"(W)e here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." - Abe Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address

“In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that day may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead." - Ronald Reagan
