Looking for a little competition on the tennis courts? Think maybe your Don Budge racquet will hold up for one more tournament?

Whether you’re old enough to remember Budge or think tennis started with Pete Sampras, the YMCA has an event for you. The sixth annual YMCA of the Northwoods Tennis Open will be held Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13 at the Rhinelander High School tennis courts.

Mike Cheslock, Program Director at the YMCA, said, “We’re hoping to grow the event this year. In the past we’ve had between 50 and 60 participants. It’s the only tournament in the Northwoods over the summer. It seems as though there’s always good weather. Rhinelander High School tennis coach Bob Heideman is the tournament coordinator.

“It’s a chance to have fun and improve your tennis skills. We get players from all over Wisconsin –– Minocqua, Eagle River, Appleton and Stevens Point. It’s a good chance for high school players to get more experience.”

Coach Heideman talked about the program, “I think it’s important for two reasons. First, for the adults, it provides an opportunity to test your tennis skills in a competitive format against players you might not get a chance to play against otherwise.

“Secondly, for the younger players, it provides a means of development. Development as a player comes from hours of play, lessons and drilling and playing competitively. There are not many tournaments for Rhinelander kids.” Heideman has stepped down as boys’ tennis coach but will continue as girls’ coach.

The top three players in each division receive medals. There are boys and girls singles and doubles ages 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18. There are also men’s and women’s singles and doubles. It is the best of three sets with no-add scoring.

Registration must be received by today. Entrants will be contacted by 5 p.m. Thursday, July 10 with match times. Singles are $15 per person and doubles are $20 per team. For more information, call the YMCA of the Northwoods at 362-9622.
