Ask the Warden
Rustic camping options available
James Jung
Question: I love to camp but am not a fan of vehicle-accessible campgrounds. What are my options for a more rustic experience in the Northwoods?
Answer: I spoke with a State Forest Ranger who works out of the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest. The forest property begins near McNaughton and extends over portions of Vilas, Oneida and Iron counties. Within the forest boundaries they have hundreds of established campsites within 16 state-owned and operated campgrounds. In addition they have wilderness campsites that will need to be reserved. I believe these are the types of sites that you are looking for. The reservation can be done online by using www.reserveamerica.com. Also, check with the state forest on the use of their established canoe sites within the forest boundaries. These may be one-night-only sites and only accessible by watercraft but will allow you to get away from the crowds. It is illegal to camp anywhere else on state property including state-owned islands. Litter, tree damage and improper camp fires are all reasons why you can not just hike and pitch your tent. Another option is to look at the Nicolet – Chequamegon National Forest, which has camping available.
