Pat Pfeiffer - Correspondent

Ah, summer at last in the Northwoods! What a treat! I hope all of you reading this in other areas will get a chance to spend time up here in Hiles this summer. Like they say, “We are north of the Tension Line.” Come, relax fish, swim, boat, cook out, camp, do your own thing and just generally enjoy yourself.

Successful Craft Show

On Saturday Hiles Service Club held its first Craft Show and Bazaar at the town hall. According to the answers on a questionnaire filled out by the vendors, the show was a pretty good one. They also offered suggestions for improvement for next year, and the Hiles Service Club will take these all into consideration when planning for next year. They also welcome suggestions from the attendees. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact Marge McCarthy at 649-3227 or Fran Pfeiffer at 649-3178.

The food went fast and eventually they ran out of it. The brownie sundaes were a very popular treat. Even the weather cooperated to make it a fun festive day.

And the Winners Are…

The drawing for a basket of products donated by the crafters who took part in the Hiles Craft Show was won by Betty Lutzka, one of the craft vendors. Another prize, a hanging floral basket was won by Erin (Chaney) Meyer.

Red Hatters Enjoy Play

Last Thursday the Hiles Hattitude group enjoyed dinner at Oneida Village in Three Lakes where they discovered other groups of Red Hatted ladies from Minocqua and Eagle River doing the same.

After dinner they attended the play “Beauty and the Beast” at the Three Lakes School. They all loved the performance, which is always a topnotch production by that group, and well worth the time and money to go see. They are eagerly awaiting next year’s play.

Swimmer’s Itch

It has been reported that there is swimmer’s itch in Pine Lake. The claim has not been proven at this time, and I am only reporting it because some swimmers may want to know of the possibility before entering the lake. It’s not a serious problem, but nobody likes to have itchy rashes. This is no cause for panic or even for staying out of the lake. The thing swimmers need to do is to towel off vigorously as soon as you get out of the water. A shower followed by vigorous toweling is an even better idea. The good news is that it is a condition that usually lasts in a lake for only about four weeks and it is now into its second week.

The parasite is transmitted from birds to snails and snails to birds. You can look it up on this Web site: http://www.swimmersitch.org.

More Dairy

It’s still Dairy Month Dairy Month, and I found another recipe for a snack idea created by Borden, the dairy product company. These sound good, and will help to get your three a day servings of dairy that most of us need for strong bones.

BBQ Ranch Quesadilla Wedges

Makes 8 servings, Prep Time: 10 minutes, Cook Time: 15 minutes

1 bag (16-ounce) frozen pepper stir-fry blend (green, red and yellow peppers and onions)

1/4 cup barbecue sauce

1/2 cup light ranch dressing

1 tablespoon butter, softened

8 (8-inch) flour tortillas

1 cup prepared barbecue shredded beef

3/4 cup Borden® Mild Cheddar Shredded Cheese

Prepare stir-fry pepper blend according to package directions. Mix barbecue sauce and ranch dressing and set aside. Spread butter evenly on one side of each tortilla and layer barbecue beef, stir-fry blend, and cheese evenly on unbuttered side of four tortillas and cover with remaining tortillas, butter side up. Grill each quesadilla in large skillet over medium heat for three minutes on each side or until golden and cheese melts. Cut into wedges and serve with barbecue ranch dipping sauce.

Tip: For fajita-ranch quesadillas, layer cooked peppers and onions, thawed fajita chicken strips and cheese on grilled flour tortillas. Serve with a signature dip comprised of equal parts salsa and ranch sauce.

Retirement

Many a retired husband becomes his wife’s full time job.

Retirement is when a man who figured he’d go fishing seven times a week finds himself washing dishes three times a day.

A retired friend of ours says he’s tired of retirement. “I wake up in the morning with nothing to do, and by bedtime I have it only half done.”
