Children need to learn how to swim
Summer is the time for boat rides, trips to water parks and vacations at the beach. It’s also the time that most accidents happen in and around the water. One of the most important things you can do for your children is to make sure they learn how to swim.
Here are 10 good reasons to learn to swim:
1. When children learn to swim, they will be safer in and around the water.
2. Children who swim stay active and strong. Swimming is great exercise.
3. Children will learn about water safety and rescue skills. In YMCA swim lessons, children learn how to recognize danger, call for help, do safe reaching, throwing assists, float and swim in a life jacket and learn about boat safety.
4. Children learn to overcome fears they might have and develop a sense of pride and accomplishment. YMCA swim lessons promote healthy, successful development.
5. As children become better swimmers, their enjoyment of the water continues to grow.
6. When children can swim, they’ll be able to explore other water sports like snorkeling and scuba diving, water skiing, water polo, synchronized swimming, swim teams and master swim programs.
7. Parents will have peace of mind knowing their children can swim. Vacations will be more relaxed.
8. Swimming is a life-long sport. It is a wonderful way to stay healthy for life.
9. Y swim lessons help children grow in spirit, mind and body: YMCA swim programs nurture children in the four character development values of Caring, Respect, Responsibility and Honesty.
10. Because children will have fun, fun, and more fun in the water.
YMCA group swim lessons are open to everyone. Families do not have to belong to the Y to sign their children up for lessons. There are two-week, four-week, and six-week sessions with morning, afternoon, and evening classes to choose from. Private swim lessons are also available for all ages and abilities.
Parents may call head swim instructor Karen Fiocchi at (715) 362-9622 for more information about the program, or for questions about their child’s swim level.
