Laona high school students Megan Maloney, Matt Koch, Jena Kitchmaster, Geoff Bull and adviser Carol Bartlein participated in the Melvin R. Laird Youth Leadership Day at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on April 21, learning about government, justice, global citizenship, environmental leadership, the arts, biomedical informatics, teamwork and the media from state and regional experts.

Created by Laird, a former Wisconsin 7th District congressman and U.S. Secretary of Defense, the event is held biennially and aimed at area sophomore and junior high school students.

This year’s keynote speaker was James Bradley, bestselling author of “Flags of Our Fathers” and president of the James Bradley Peace Foundation, which fosters understanding between America and Asia. Bradley’s father, John, was one of the flag raisers at Iwo Jima. An Antigo native, Bradley has traveled the world, living and working in more than 40 countries for nearly a decade. He has run companies in five countries, jumped out of airplanes at 15,000 feet, scuba- dived in deep waters worldwide, trekked to Mount Everest's base camp, walked among lions in Africa and now surfs daily in Waikiki.

Students also attended workshops led by Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson and Justice Ann Walsh Bradley of the Wisconsin Supreme Court; Andrew Halverson, mayor of Stevens Point; Tom Petri, Wisconsin congressman; Rev. James Trainor, physicist; Christine Thomas, dean of the UWSP College of Natural Resources; Eric Yonke and Mark Koepke of International Programs at UWSP; Dr. Justin Starren, a physician at the Marshfield Clinic; Bill Carollo, an official with the National Football League; Frank Aukofer, former Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel bureau chief in Washington D.C; and Adriane Fang, alumna and professional dancer.
