Your School : Wabeno students inducted into National Honor Society
A formal induction ceremony was held at Waubee Lodge in Lakewood for 15 students from Wabeno High School as they joined the Wabeno High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.
To be eligible for consideration for membership, juniors and seniors must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 out of a possible. 4.0. Candidates then complete a personal information form and are rated by faculty members in the areas of leadership, service and character. Students qualifying in this personal rating, then move on to faculty council consideration, which approves their membership. New members must continue to meet the standards in the areas of scholarship, leaders, service and character.
The National Honor Society was founded in 1921, as an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. Chapters exist in three-fourths of the nation’s high schools and, since then millions of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior members by the sponsoring organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Student inductees included Cody Aderholdt, Amber Baugnet, Samantha Bresnyan, Felicia Cassidy, Kelly Ellis, Andrew Harrison, Lauren Hoffman, Cassandra Huettl, Hannah Huettl, Meghan Keller, Melissa Miller, Alisha Nieft, Jameson Smits, Rachel Spreeman and Cassandra Weyers.
Each new inductee presented a portion of the program, with assistance from past inductees and Chapter Advisor, Rita Blazewicz. Blazewicz welcomed guests to Waubee Lodge. Cody Aderholdt spoke on the NHS Background and History, and Cassandra Huettl explained the Selection Procedure. Cassandra Weyers explained the NHS Insignia and the symbolism in the candle formation. Hannah Huettl discussed the importance of knowledge and passing that knowledge on to those around us. Rachel Spreeman spoke on the importance of good character, while Meghan Keller spoke on the need for leaders and leadership. Jameson Smits spoke on the importance of service to everyone, and pointed out the amount of community service performed by everyone a year ago when a tornado hit “close to home”. This was followed by the candle ceremony and the presentation of the group to the audience.
Senior inductees and their parents were introduced and future plans of each senior were announced.
Amber Baugnet, daughter of Gerard and Julie Baugnet of Townsend, plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, to study accounting and business administration.
Felicia Cassidy is the daughter of Shawn and Christina Cassidy of Wabeno. Cassidy plans to attend NWTC to study business and administrative assistance.
Kelly Ellis is the daughter of Evelyn and David Gaede of Townsend. Ellis plans to enter UW-Stevens Point in the fall, majoring in philosophy, psychology and physics. She hopes to get into the theatre program the following year.
Andrew Harrison is the son of Alan and Diane Harrison of Wabeno. Harrison plans to attend the University of Wisconsin in Stevens Point, majoring in secondary education.
Lauren Hoffman is the daughter of Joe Hoffman of Mountain. Hoffman plans to attend St. Norbert College in DePere. Her future plans are undecided, but she is leaning toward a degree in history or science.
Cassandra Huettl is the daughter of Teresa and the late Don Huettl of Wabeno. Huettl will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh majoring in criminal justice.
Meghan Keller is the daughter of Dale and Mary Ellen Keller of Lakewood. Keller will be attending Lawrence University in Appleton, majoring in East Asian Language and Culture and International Relations.
Melissa Miller is the daughter of Mike and Cindy Miller of Wabeno. Miller will attend Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, working toward a degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant.
Alisha Nieft is the daughter of Dennis and Lisa Nieft of Townsend. Nieft plans to attend Carroll College, majoring in biology education.
Cassandra Weyers is the daughter of Greg and Patti Weyers of Lakewood. Weyers will be attending Carroll College in the fall, studying to become a physical therapist, with a long range goal of acquiring a doctorate degree.
