Winnie Krueger - Forest County Museum

The inspiration for a new display at the Forest County Museum came with the donation last year of a beautiful wedding dress that was worn by Mary Bernadette Quinlan when she was married to William James McHale in 1916.

Mary was the daughter of Micheal J. Quinlan of the Menominee Bay Shore lumber company in Wabeno/Soperton. Mr. McHale met Mary when he worked for Menominee Bay Shore while a college student. He and Mary lived in Soperton until December 1930. They then moved to Chilton, Wisconsin and ran a newspaper. Mary died in 1967. Along with the dress and veil the family donated a copy of a picture of Mary with her father on her wedding day.

This dress and picture will be on display in the museum dining room for the 2008 season. The Society would like to add wedding dresses from other periods to the display which will be set as an “at home wedding reception.” If you have a wedding dress that we could borrow for the summer (museum closes after Art in the Square in September) it would be greatly appreciated. For more information about how the dresses will be displayed or to make a wedding dress loan for the summer, call 478-3456 and leave a message.

We hope to have a story and picture to accompany each dress and show how weddings have changed over the years.

The museum will open June 3. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
