Five of seven positions advance to sectionals
by Daily News Sports
It was a successful day at subsectionals for the Rhinelander boys’ tennis team Monday as five of seven positions advanced to sectionals.
The Hodags finished second as a team in the eight-school field at Wausau East with 18 points. As expected, Wisconsin Valley Conference champions Stevens Point came in first place with 24 points.
Wisconsin Rapids (12) was third, followed by Wausau East (8) and Marshfield (8), Wausau West (4), D.C. Everest (2) and Lakeland (0).
Two of three Rhinelander doubles’ teams moved on to sectionals as Dan Barbian and Matt Peacock, at No. 3, scored a 6-2, 6-1 win in the opening round and knocked off a Marshfield duo for the first time in three tries this season. The Marshfield pair, who were seeded No. 2, won the first set 6-2, but Barbian and Peacock (18-6 on the season) won the next two sets 6-2, 7-5.
“Matt had a quick second serve and Dan put away a number of shots,” Rhinelander head coach Bob Heideman said.
At No. 2 doubles, Dan Chojnacki and Steve Trochlil (16-3) won two three-set matches on the day to advance. The No. 2 seed won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the first match against their D.C. Everest counterpart and battled for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (9-7), 6-3 win over a Marshfield pair.
“They just kept at it,” Heideman said. “The score doesn’t seem to bother them.”
Chojnacki and Trochlil have combined to win seven three-set matches this season.
In singles action, three of four Hodags will compete at sectionals.
Rahul Jain (21-1), No. 1, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Lakeland’s Joe Santarius in his only match of the day.
Shane Polzin (21-4) was victorious 6-0, 6-2 over D.C. Everest’s Soua Yang and downed Jace Kramer of Wausau West, 6-1, 6-1. Polzin was the top seed in No. 3 action.
At No. 4 singles, Abe Phillips (18-5) won 6-4, 6-0 over Jake Stamas of Marshfield and beat Wisconsin Rapids’ Nick Tetzloff, 6-1, 6-1.
Ending their seasons on Monday was senior No. 2 singles player Andy Bognar, who lost in the first round 6-0, 6-3 to Marshfield’s Nick Ackerman and the No. 1 doubles’ team of Kolin Dean and Jordan Rhode, 6-4, 6-4 losers to a Marshfield pair.
“(They all) contributed to our success this year and fought hard match in and match out,” said Heideman.
The Hodags who qualified for sectionals will play at Marshfield Thursday at 9:30 a.m. for a chance to advance to state.
