SPASH wins Valley tennis title
By John Paul Norton - Special to the Daily News
The Rhinelander boys’ tennis team finally met their match in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and then some as Stevens Point dismantled RHS’s conference title hopes by beating them 6-1 on Tuesday in Rhinelander.
At the beginning of the season, Rhinelander coach Bob Heideman new that SPASH would once again be the team to beat in the conference, and now that prediction has been proven correct.
“From top to bottom, Stevens Point is a good team,” Heideman said. “They came to our courts, and they handed it to us. Give them credit.”
The Hodags lost their first dual meet of the season, and if they were going to lose to someone, at least they fell to a superior team.
“At every position, they are either a number one or a number two seed in our conference,” Heideman said.
The Hodags are 6-1 in the conference and 10-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Panthers won the conference title with a 7-0 mark.
The Hodags will now have to see if they can rebound at the conference meet on Friday.
Rahul Jain accomplished a new feat of sorts against SPASH.
While being the lone Hodag to come out on top in his match, Jain also managed to win his first three-set match of his career.
In the first set, Jain was getting the shots he wanted, but acquired a tendency to hit the net. He went down 0-3 in the second set then started to turn it around by winning four consecutive games. From then on, Jain dominated the match and ended up winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Spash's top seed, Elliot O'Neill.
In other matches, Andy Bognar lost to Point's Will Peck 2-6, 5-7 at no. 2 singles; in no. 3 singles, Alex Morgenroth defeated Shane Polzin in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6; and at no. 4 singles, Mike Sweeney bowed out, as he subbed for Abe Phillips, 0-6, 2-6 to Point's Michael Chang.
SPASH dominated in doubles action, too, as the Hodags' no.1 team of Kolin Dean and Jordan Rhode lost to Kipp Graham and Wade Wagber, 1-6, 2-6; by that same score the Panthers' Zach Graham and Trevor Sorenson ended up being too much for RHS' Dan Chojnacki and Steve Trochlil in no. 2 doubles; and at no. 3 doubles, the Hodag team of Dan Barbian and Matt Peacock made it interesting, but lost to Point's Chris Peck and Logan Rastedt 4-6, 2-6.
Despite the loss, Coach Heideman said his team has nothing to be ashamed of.
"We had good effort, and we never gave up. We can walk off the court with our heads held high.
Hopes are high, too, now as the Hodags go to Wausau on Friday for the conference meet, which starts at 9 a.m.

Ask the Warden
Q: I have been reading some articles in outdoor magazines that describe how to build a wooden boat out of plywood and epoxy. I plan on making a 12-foot pram style boat with my grandson and giving it to him for his 12th birthday. I also want to place an electric motor or small gas motor on the boat. I realize the boat will need to be registered but am wondering how I go about registering a homemade boat? How can I determine the carrying capacity and how do I determine the horsepower rating?
