(Popple River News) - Now the maple syrup should flow freely with temperatures in the 50's daytime with lots of sunshine, and lows down to eight degrees at night. With temps like that, our thirteen inches of snow we got last week, between Tuesday and Saturday, should melt in no time at all. We will be glad to see it go and look forward to spring rain showers. Then we can get out to continue our walking programs with ease, which contributes to control of heart disease, high blood pressure and weight control, among other health issues. So good for the soul too, to see the wonders of nature surrounding us.

Speaking of nature, I sighted another spring arrival on Friday, the Fox Sparrow...hope it stays around for a few days. It was so cute to watch the birds dig holes through the snow to get feed and pop in and out of them. Fox Sparrows are great scratchers and bob about the ground. I hope the robins found the raisins I put out for them before all the snow came. Joe Peterson gave a hint on what to put out for the robins in situations like we've had...hamburger. Sounds logical, since robins are meat eaters, too.

Konitzers were here for the snowy weekend we had. Larry Van Boxel and Lynn were here earlier in the week but headed home before the snows came.

It was so sad these last two weeks to hear of the two vehicle accidents that happened in our county, taking the lives of husbands and fathers, as we would say, "before their time." Our deepest sympathies to the families of Richie Gilligan and Donald Huettl for the loss of their loved ones.

Also our sympathies go out to the family of Reggie Gerl, who passed away late March. Reggie had been a summer resident here after retirement for a time, and also a long-time vacationer during his working years to his cabin on the Ed Gerl road. He lived a long a healthy life and enjoyed what the Northwoods had to offer.

Enjoy your week.
