Thirteen Wabeno High School students were honored by the Wabeno Lions Club at its 33rd Annual Student Honors Banquet on Tuesday, April 1 at Indian Springs. Each year, the Lions ask teachers from Wabeno High School to select a student that can be called outstanding in that teacher’s particular field of study. They are the students of whom teachers can say “This is the student that I can point to as an example for other students in my classes to follow.” The students and their teachers are then invited to be guests at a banquet at which the teachers talk briefly about the students and then present them with award certificates designed by the Lions Club. Parents/guardians; other faculty, school staff, administration, and school board members; a guest speaker; and Lions Club members also attend.

This year’s honored students were Ben Schmitt (son of Lori Cornette of Lakewood) in technology education, Audra Demmith (daughter of Don and Pam Demmith of Mountain) in vocal music, Amanda Leonard (daughter of Thomas and Tina Leonard of Wabeno) in social studies, Amber Baugnet (daughter of Gerard and Julie Baugnet of Townsend) in mathematics, Alisha Nieft (daughter of Dennis and Lisa Nieft of Townsend) in instrumental music, Erica Keller (daughter of Dale and Mary Ellen Keller of Lakewood) in English, Meghan Keller (daughter of Dale and Mary Ellen Keller of Lakewood) in biological science, Andrew Harrison (son of the Alan and Diane Harrison of Wabeno) and Lauren Hoffman (daughter of Joe Hoffman of Mountain and Amy Sorenson of Green Bay) in physical education, Andrea Olsen (daughter of Kristy Hegner of Lakewood) in art, Jim Smits (son of Carolyn Smits of Townsend) in physical science, Rachel Spreeman (daughter of James and Brenda Spreeman of Wabeno) in foreign language, and Rachel Rocole (daughter of Mike and Michele Rocole of Lakewood) in the Wisconsin virtual school coursework.

In addition to an excellent meal, the students and guests were treated to an inspirational presentation by guest speaker Gina VanEperen. She emphasized the importance of choosing a life of service, life-long learning and leadership. She also talked about the importance of choosing a future of work that you love, visualizing what you want your life to be and then following a path that will get you there. VanEperen was a Lions Honor Student in music in 2001. As a high school student, she was member of the National Honor Society and lettered in academics, music and basketball. She was an honor graduate of Wabeno High School in 2001. She graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, with an Associate Degree of Science in Chiropractic Technology. She received a Certificate of Professional Achievement from Life Chiropractic College West as a Chiropractic Assistant. She is also a member of the American Chiropractic Registry of Radiologic Technologists. In addition, she went to NWTC to become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician. She is presently a Chiropractic Technician at the Nobles Chiropractic Wellness Center in Lakewood, where she resides with her husband Greg.

Future Wabeno Lions sponsored events include the Paddlewheel Extravaganza on April 12 (a fundraiser), a dinner for local senior citizens on April 25 and the Wabeno High School Senior Banquet in May. The Lions will also select high school seniors to receive scholarships and service awards.
