The Laona High School Forensics Team of 2008 consists of seniors Brittany Cleereman, Katie Sharko, Kristin Zimmer, Junior Matt Koch and freshman Heather Zimmer. The students competed at Elcho High School at Sub-District in February. All five students earned the opportunity to go on to District competition, where they competed on March 29 at Tomahawk. Their perfect season continues with all five members qualifying for state competition at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in April.

Seniors Katie Sharko and Brittany Cleereman are teaming up for the second season in a row in the category of Group Interpretation. Their comical selection is an analysis of the teenage and parent relationship as seen by author Erma Bombeck. Sharko and Cleereman are making their second trip to Madison in Group Interpretation. Their goal is to improve on the bronze they won in 2007.

Senior Kristin Zimmer is this year’s only four year forensics participant. This is also the fourth trip Kristin earned to Madison. She competes in Farrago, with an eclectic reading of poetry, prose and drama, all with the theme of music and musicians. As a freshman and sophomore Zimmer performed with her sister, Maria. This year will be her only chance to prove her excellence in the solo category of Farrago at the state level. In 2007 Zimmer relinquished competition in Madison to take her ACT test.

Matt Koch, an accomplished speaker, won a gold medal in Madison in 2007 with a perfect score in Moments in History. This is Koch’s third year in the six-minute historic speech category. Koch has researched, written and perfected his speech about the 1920’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago. On March 29, in Tomahawk, he received perfect scores in all three rounds of competition.

The newest member of the LHS Forensics team is Heather Zimmer. In spite of her beginning status in high school forensics, she is proving to be a very talented speaker who brings strong Junior High forensics’ experience with her. Zimmer will make her first appearance in Madison in Prose Reading. Her selection is a comic piece about money by Dave Barry.

In addition to competition in Elcho, Tomahawk and Madison, the team, coached by Carol Bartlein, will also appear at the Laona Lighted Schoolhouse. For additional practices the students perform their pieces in classes in the high school, junior high and upper elementary.
