While the warmer weather and melting snow might be a welcome sight for many in Forest County, the spring-like weather conditions bring about the end of the snowmobile season. All Forest County Snowmobile Trails will officially close at noon on Wednesday, April 2, 2008.

Residents and visitors to Forest County enjoyed a 15 week snowmobile season due to the hard work of our six area snowmobile clubs, cooperation of mother nature and support of our area landowners.

Additionally, the Nicolet State Trail will be closed for ATV and mountain bike use starting on the day of the official closing of the County Snowmobile Trail system (April 2, 2008) and continuing through April 30, 2008. Forest County Ordinance No. 03-99 prohibits the use of ATV’s on all snowmobile trails in Forest County.

All ATV’s and mountain bikes will be prohibited from using the Nicolet State Trail during this time. Towns that have ATV routes designated by town ordinance and state law will not be affected by this closure.

The continued use of ATV’s on snowmobile trails may cause damage to private property, which may result in the closure of snowmobile trails on private property in the future.

The Nicolet State Trail is the abandoned railroad corridor in eastern Forest County starting in the Town of Carter at the Forest/Oconto line and proceeding north to a point approximately 1/4 mile south of County Hwy. H in Laona. The Nicolet State Trail starts again at County Hwy. O in the Town of Cavour and proceeds north to the Forest/Florence County line.

The Nicolet State Trail will reopen for use on May 1, 2008.
