Oneida County has a new Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) coordinator.

Jennifer Holman has been on the job since March 17.

Holman vacationed in the Northwoods as a child, and developed a love for its many beautiful lakes, so when the AIS position became available she says she “jumped at the chance to preserve the lakes I grew up with.”

Holman said she believes the key to protecting local water sources is education.

The AIS coordinator position has been vacant since the end of last year, following the resignation of Radley Watkins, who left after nine months to take a job in the private sector.

The AIS coordinator position was approved by the county board in October of 2006 but progress toward finding the county’s first coordinator was slow.

ed by supervisors' concerns over a vague job description and worries over duplication of effort within other departments.

Aquatic invasive species have long been a concern of the county board with supervisors frequently commenting that more must be done to ensure invasives don't destroy the area's tourism economy.

Following an exhaustive search, Watkins was hired in March of 2007.

When he announced his resignation in December, the county’s land and water conservation committee revised the job description to make the position available to applicants who do not hold degrees in natural resources.

Holman graduated from Indiana University in 2000 and holds a degree in environmental management.

She will be introduced to the Oneida County Board in April.
