You say you've got kids and reading "Curious George" over and over again is driving you crazy? Perhaps "The Pokey Little Puppy" is sending you up a tree?

It's time to find some new books and there's an event coming up just made for old and new readers alike. The Twenty-first Annual Children's Book Fest is scheduled for March 11 and 12, 2008.

Northern Wisconsin librarians, teachers, parents and members of the general public who are interested in learning about the best books for young people are invited to attend Children's Book Fest 2008, a two day conference to be held at the Rhinelander Holiday Inn Express.

Children's literature specialist from the nationally acclaimed Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) in Madison will discuss books for children and young adults at an evening presentation on Tuesday, March 11 and at a day presentation on Wednesday, March 12. Both sessions will include a CCBC exhibit of the best books for young readers from the year 2007.

The Cooperative Children's Book Center is a children's literature library for adults, a book examination center and a research library. Each year, the CCBC receives review copies of almost all trade and alternative press books published in the United States for children and young adults. The Center helps librarians, teachers and parents across Wisconsin spend their children's book dollars wisely by giving them the opportunity to see recommended books before purchase.

CCBC Director Kathleen T. Horning and her staff publish CCBC Choices as an annual recommended best books list. Book Fest participants will receive a free copy of the 100-page booklet as part of their registration package.

The Children's Book Fest evening presentation on March 11 includes time from 4 to 6:30 p.m. to browse through the CCBC book exhibit followed by the main presentation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Additional time to examine the CCBC book exhibit and talk with the speakers is scheduled from 8 to 9 p.m. The registration fee of $6 includes a copy of CCBC Choices, other booklists and a CCBC honorarium.

The CCBC Book Fest day presentation begins on March 12 with registration and morning refreshments at 8:30 a.m. followed by a legislative update and other announcements at 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m. CCBC staff will discuss current trends in children's literature and present slides featuring the best books of 2007. The registration fee of $6 for the day includes morning refreshments, CCBC Choices, other booklists and a CCBC honorarium. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the CCBC book exhibit during the first hour of the day and again in the afternoon following lunch.

Plans include an opportunity on both March 11 and 12 for individuals to purchase award-winning books highlighted by the speakers through an independent arrangement with Brown Street Books in Rhinelander.

Local supporters of Children's Book Fest include Brown Street Books, M&I Bank, Ripco Credit Union and Wisconsin Public Service. Additional assistance is received from the Indianhead Federated Library System, Northern Waters Library Service and Wisconsin Valley Library Service.

Complete registration information about Children's Book Fest may be obtained at the Rhinelander District Library or from its website http://wvls.lib.wi.us/Rhinelander District Library. All registrations must be received no later than March 7. Telephone inquires for the Wednesday presentation may be made to the library at (715) 365-1070. More information about the Tuesday presentation is available from the Headwaters Reading Council members Joan Belongia Mode (362-5111) or Colleen Konicek (588-3243).

Football team appreciates support of the community
Parents, grandparents, uncles, families and friends, local businesses and Hodag football supporters: Due to your generosity our locker room pledge drive was a great success. Our goal was to raise $8,000 to $10,000 to purchase 40 lockers for our varsity locker room. We crushed this goal and raised enough money to purchase 100 lockers and the ability to have every male athlete in a new locker. These new lockers will allow us to secure our valuable equipment. In addition and I believe more important is that it shows our kids we care and will make the locker room less stressful. This facility has needed this improvement for three decades and you made it happen. Personally, I can not thank you enough for giving us the opportunity make this improvement for our students.
