(Popple River News) - What a great day at the beach to cool off in the 87-degree weather...Oops! I pulled up the wrong file. I can dream, can't I? We will probably think of these cold winter days when it is 87 degrees outside next summer, just to cool us off.

We had three to four inches of snow in Popple River Sunday, which freshened up the landscaping a bit. I hope the skiers and snowmobilers are happy. It is good to see via TV that people are enjoying snow sports this winter. The only snow sport I am doing this year is the shoveling of it? I hope it comes to an end soon, as the banks are getting high to throw the snow over them.

I steered our son in Florida to my sister's Web site of her snow photos in Sheboygan, and as you know, they received quite a few feet of snow there. His reply was, "The photos were pretty, and that is the only place I want to see snow, in pictures." I still like the four seasons, but I must admit I don't like to drive in a snowstorm. Home is a good place to stay when it snows a lot.

Rosie and Wayne Konitzer came to their Northwoods retreat early on Wednesday and stopped by to visit a bit with us and also brought a nice Valentine treat. Rosie got ambitious in the a.m. and baked and decorated very cute little chocolate heart-shaped cakes. Lois Kemps was also given one. Wasn't that nice of Rosie and Wayne? We thought so.

We took a trip to Green Bay to run some errands on Friday and also visited with my sister and decided to stay overnight. Saturday was a pleasant day there, nice and sunny, which made the outdoors seem warmer than it really was. I guess I don't like shopping in crowds, as I always say, I won't ever go again on a weekend. But we had to plan the trip around the weather forecast, as we didn't want to get caught in a snowstorm. We usually end up bumping into someone we know while shopping, but didn't this trip. Perhaps they all were Up North snowmobiling and skiing. Good place to be.

It doesn't seem like the flu and cold bugs are around too much this winter, as I don't hear of many people down with it. I just know I picked up a cold bug somewhere and got a cold that doesn't want to leave me after two weeks. I guess it likes me too much. Perhaps then it will let somebody else alone!

I hope you were happy with your vote on Tuesday. We will have nine more months to listen to the political advertisements on TV and radio and deal with the mail and phone ads. I believe that research is the most reliable source of selecting the best candidate. It is good to dig into the facts in selecting your candidate.

Stay warm.

Football team appreciates support of the community
Parents, grandparents, uncles, families and friends, local businesses and Hodag football supporters: Due to your generosity our locker room pledge drive was a great success. Our goal was to raise $8,000 to $10,000 to purchase 40 lockers for our varsity locker room. We crushed this goal and raised enough money to purchase 100 lockers and the ability to have every male athlete in a new locker. These new lockers will allow us to secure our valuable equipment. In addition and I believe more important is that it shows our kids we care and will make the locker room less stressful. This facility has needed this improvement for three decades and you made it happen. Personally, I can not thank you enough for giving us the opportunity make this improvement for our students.
