James Ogurek, owner of Beltone Hearing Solutions, Inc. and president of the International Hearing Society, presided over the Chapter Leadership Conference at the International Hearing Society's 56th annual convention and exposition held Sept. 26-30 in Reno, Nev.

“IHS chapter leaders from around the world, including the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan, gathered to discuss many diverse topics pertinent to effective leadership at the local level. Attendees were given information and tools to take home to become stronger, more viable groups,” Ogurek said. The conference covered all aspects of leading hearing health care associations in today's world. “Leading a hearing health care association can be a challenge. However, this conference provided leaders with what they need to continue to make a difference for their associations. Networking with other leaders gives them additional knowledge that can immediately be put to use to improve their chapters.”

Oral health awareness campaign continues

The Northwoods Dental Project will continue to increase oral health awareness and children's dental care in Vilas and Oneida Counties thanks to an award of $4,999 from the American Dental Association Foundation's (ADAF) Samuel Harris Fund. Established by the ADAF to prevent childhood tooth decay, the Harris Fund is a permanent endowment and receives generous support from the Colgate-Palmolive Company.

Each year, grants up to $5,000 go to educational and preventive programs, seeking to improve children's dental health. This year, 73 programs received funding nationally out of more than 440 submitted applications. They totaled $325,000.

The Northwoods Dental Project provides oral health education, screenings, fluoride varnish and dental sealant applications at Head Start centers and school districts in Vilas and Oneida counties.

OPINION ALL OPINIONS >
Football team appreciates support of the community
Parents, grandparents, uncles, families and friends, local businesses and Hodag football supporters: Due to your generosity our locker room pledge drive was a great success. Our goal was to raise $8,000 to $10,000 to purchase 40 lockers for our varsity locker room. We crushed this goal and raised enough money to purchase 100 lockers and the ability to have every male athlete in a new locker. These new lockers will allow us to secure our valuable equipment. In addition and I believe more important is that it shows our kids we care and will make the locker room less stressful. This facility has needed this improvement for three decades and you made it happen. Personally, I can not thank you enough for giving us the opportunity make this improvement for our students.
