Your School : Laona Ice Fishing Club
On January 26, the Laona Fishing Club had an Ice Fishing Outing on Pine Lake. This was brought to us through the 21st Century Grant. Teachers Dan Lazzeroni, Luke Martinson and Ryan Kelly coordinate the Laona Fishing Club.
The weather was almost perfect for the day. It started out with snow showers and then proceeded into partly cloudy skies with a high of 26 degrees and calm winds. The fish cooperated beautifully with several being taken.
Winners of the contest were Michael Lempel in first place and Jaimoe Kaiser in second place for northerns, Edwin Slimmer in first place for bass and Austin Babich in first place for pan fish.
A special thanks to the parents and chaperones that attended and helped out. These included Laona School District Principal Dave Aslyn, Wayne Slimmer, Kurt Bey and Bill Novak. Also a big thanks to Mrs. Nelitz's food class, Mrs. Winkelman and Mrs. Bradle for their time and effort with the chili, prizes and supplies.
The Big Northern
Mike Lempel
It was Saturday morning about 8 a.m. We were leaving from the school. About an hour later we arrived at Pine Lake. Right away we started drilling holes and putting tip-ups in them. We got everything set up, then a flag went up and we all raced for it but Jaimoe got there first. He pulled the line up it was a little northern about 13 inches long. He let it go.
Then we started drilling holes for jigging. Austin was jigging in my hole. He didn't catch anything. About 30 minutes later, we caught another northern. This one was about 15 inches long. After we caught that one, I thought I would try my luck at jigging.
I put my jig on with a wax worm. I got a few nibbles here and there. Then, just when I was reeling my line up, I got a bite. Little did I know it was a bite. I thought I got hooked on the ice, when all of a sudden the line swung to the other side. I started reeling in the fish. It pulled some more line out. I knew it was going to be a big fish. Every time I would reel in, it would just pull more line out. But pretty soon the fish just gave up. I reeled him in.
Mr. Martinson pulled him on the ice. We took a couple pictures, then we measured him. He was 28 inches long and really fat. Later that day, I caught a 25-inch northern on a tip-up. That day we ended up catching about 21 kept fish. That's my story. Thanks for reading.
