(Popple River News) - Last week's news

The sunshine we have been having these last days is a very pleasant change from the dreariness of cloudy skies this past month. With the sunshine it brought warmer temperatures to enjoy. I noticed many visitors in the Northwoods who came for snowmobiling and skiing. Sunday morning, the highway was filled with bus loads of people and streams of cars with their skiis headed for the ski hill. It was a beautiful weekend to enjoy for all outdoor sports. There is at least a foot of snow on the ground, so that should be enough to play in.

Our condolences to the family of Betty Nollenberg, who passed away this month after a courageous battle with cancer. She and her husband, Carl, enjoyed quite a few of their retirement years in the Northwoods in Newald, their favorite place to be. She will certainly be missed by all who knew her.

Mary Jane Sullivan's family members who came for her funeral last week from Colorado were nephew Dan and daughters, Kimberly and Courtney, nephew Bill and daughter, Toni Rae, and Bill's friend Melba, nephew Kelly and friend Roxy, niece Mary Bev (Sis) and friend, Sue. Mary Jane's Aunt Pat also came from Colorado. Grandniece Leandra came from Green Bay. All left Sunday to go back home after taking care of affairs here.

Lois Kemps reported two turkey jakes and two young hens in her yard on Sunday morning, the first she had seen in over a year. They didn't wander over to ours, so we didn't get the chance to see them. Phyllis Brabank told us she has 37 turkeys visiting her yard on a regular basis. Wow! Must be a pretty sight...now if they wouldn't leave such a mess behind!

We stopped by the Florence Villa on Wednesday to visit several folks and noticed Mary Lou Egen's name on the roster, so we stopped by to visit with her a bit. We gave her an update of things in our area.

We were invited to the mealsite in Alvin, along with Carl and Nancy Tauer of Hiles and enjoyed the delicious boiled dinner and desserts prepared by their on-site cook. It was a pleasant gathering and a bonus was a loaf of bread donated to the site by a local store, Angeli's Market. Another bonus was that someone had fresh brown chicken eggs to sell, of which we eagerly took advantage...and had for breakfast the very next morning. What a treat to have farm-fresh eggs!

Carol Stefanski will have a birthday on February 2 and Ray Belunes will be celebrating his (?) birthday on February 5. Jerry and Pat Gilligan will be celebrating their 31st wedding anniversary on February 5. Congratulations to all of you and enjoy your special day.

This week's news

We were back down to a very cold day last Wednesday after a very snowy day on Tuesday. It was too cold to remove snow, so we waited until Thursday to take care of that big detail. It was difficult to get an accurate reading of the snowfall due to the windy conditions, but I measured quite a few spots and believe we received about five inches.

There were a lot of big drifts. We received another inch Friday night into Saturday, so that contributed a bit more for good snow conditions for outdoor sports. The business places should appreciate that.

We were in Iron Mountain on Friday doing a bit of shopping after Ed's medical checkup (which was very good) and found very sloppy conditions in the parking lots. Perhaps the warmer conditions the last few days melted some of the slushy, salty slop. Other than the sloppy conditions, it was a very pleasant day to be out...to get rid of the winter dulldrums!

One more week of football and the season is over for a few months when it will all begin again. It certainly was a super-duper Super Bowl to watch on Sunday. Both teams gave us what we wanted...a close exciting game. Did your favorite pick win?

Sunday morning after church we stopped in to see Mutz Greve, as it was her birthday last week on January 30. We had muffins and coffee for a treat and brought Mutz a special one with a candle on it as her birthday cake. We visited awhile and enjoyed the view in the backyard, watching the birds come to the feeders, a nice visit.

We had a great treat of oranges which son, Kevin brought home with him from Texas...also some bell shaped tangerine/grapefruit cross mineolas. He came to visit with us for the Super Bowl and do some ice fishing for a couple days. Hope the fish are biting as we are hungry for some fresh northerns or walleyes.

The February monthly town board meeting will be on Tuesday, February 12 at the Town Hall at 6 p.m. and all are welcome.

A few more February birthdays are Cal Peters on February 9, Rick Lemmen on February 12, Lisa Walli on February 18, Jerry N. Gilligan on February 23, Ed Penasa and Kathy Macaluso on February 25 and Rhonda Weronke on February 27.

Hope you all have a great day on your special day.
