Little mistakes costly in Hodags loss
Marshfield scores a 63-9 victory
By Michael Patterson - Daily News Sports
The heavyweights got Rhinelander off to a good start but mental errors allowed Marshfield to sweep the remaining weight classes resulting in a lopsided 63-9 win for the Tigers on Thursday night in Rhinelander.
“Overall I was a little bit disappointed,” Rhinelander head coach Jim Kreitlow said. “I thought with the way we matched up that we would be able to win four or five matches.”
Jon Palutke won the first match of the dual meet with a quick pin in the first period over Cody Cheekin at 215 and Jake Mahoney followed with a 6-0 decision victory at 285 against Dan Ress as the Hodags went ahead 9-0.
“Those are our two bright spots,” Kreitlow said about his two heavyweights Palutke and Mahoney. “As the season goes on I think we're going to be hanging our hats on those two guys as far as going a long way in the postseason.”
But that would be the final points scored for Rhinelander as Jacob Randall (103) lost by a pin to Torin Boernke in the second period. Jenny Walker's struggles in the 112 continued with her defeat to Daniel Barton by a tech. fall (17-2) with just 25 seconds left in the third period.
Marshfield took the lead 17-9 when Brenton Dotter lost in his match with Robert Stevenson in the 125.
Kreitlow talked about why he was disappointed with the performance of his experienced wrestlers.
“Some of the other kids with lack of experience I can understand but some of the ones that should be getting wins for us didn't get it done tonight.”
Mike Cinfio returned to the line up from a shoulder injury and lasted through almost two periods in his 130 match before being pinned by Josh Accola with 13 seconds to go.
Kreitlow felt that despite not having wrestled in awhile coupled with the continued shoulder pain, that Cinfio stood a chance at a win.
“He's a little bit rusty,” Kreitlow said about the returning sophomore. “But still I think it was a potentially winnable match, it's just that tight shoulder, so we'll have to re-evaluate and see if he's ready.”
Nick Danielczak led after two periods in his match with Trenton Larson in the 145lb weight division before losing by a pin in the third as Marshfield jumped out to a 44-9 lead.
Sam Schneider lost a 10-5 decision with Garrick Chaffin in the 160. Schneider was down 7-2 after two and climbed back into the match but the junior made a costly mistake in the end.
“He gave up a 3-point near fall by sitting too long,” Kreitlow said about what happened to Schneider. “Those little mistakes cost us.”
In the 171, Travis Unverzagt lost by a pin to Jordan Koranda to give Marshfield a 59-9 lead and Randy Platek lost by a major decision to Alex Mitchell in the 189 to give the Tigers the win.
