(Hiles News) - The fashion statement for the week is blaze orange! It's popping up all over the north woods, and seen at some of the most “trendy” places.

The Playground Committee had a successful bake sale last Friday and wish to thank all the bakers that donated and the customers who bought the delicious baked treats.

The Ladies Aid of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hiles, put on another of their annual Chili Suppers last Saturday night. They fed a sizable crowd of hungry hunters and others that good chili and a varied assortment of pies. If you missed it this year, be sure to mark your new 2008 calendar for next year. It is always the first Saturday of the deer gun season.

Christmas Parties

The party season is about to begin. Many people are already asking about the annual Fire Department's Christmas pot luck dinner. It is always the first Saturday of December, which this year is on December 1. It's a good tip to mark anything coming up on the first of the month on the page of the previous month so you don't miss it, so somewhere on the November page make note of the pot luck dinner.

The Fire Department is buying the meat as usual, and everyone attending is asked to bring a dish to pass. Bring the whole family and any guests you may have, because this is one of the best pot luck dinners in the state. We have some really good cooks in Hiles, and that may even be one of the requirements to qualify for residence here. I'm not sure about that, but I do know that the food brought to the Fire Department's Christmas dinner is always top-notch, so be sure to be there!

There will be a special visit from Santa Claus for kids of all ages. At the end of the evening they draw names for the centerpieces on the table. Everyone goes home with a full and happy belly.

This year the service Club is combining their tree lighting with the Christmas dinner, and there will be a special treat, because Margaret McCarthy is getting the kids of the town ready to sing for us. The evening should get even the grouchiest Scrooge or Grinch in a cheerful holiday mood.

Also coming up is the combined Pool League and Red Hatter's Christmas party. The Pool League always draws names at this party to determine the teams for pool season which starts in January. A large number of members of the Pool League are also members of Red Hatters, so the two groups have combined their holiday celebration.

There is a gift exchange with the gift value being about $10. The dinner is off the menu, cooked by hosts Paul and Terri Jenkins at Pine Lake Pub. The date for this party has not been determined yet, but the members of both groups will be notified as soon as it is set.

Witticisms

The wise man has long ears, big eyes and a short tongue.

Never buy what you don't want because it is cheap.

To remember at that overloaded Thanksgiving table: The smaller the waistline, the longer the life.

Lost time is never found.
