Centennial celebration planned
Celebration plans for the county's courthouse centennial have been announced
In 2008, the Oneida County Courthouse turns 100. Birthday events are being planned well in advance, with a number of individuals and civic groups participating in giving the historical landmark its due. The three-story, neo-classical building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
Events commemorating the Centennial will take place throughout the year. The county-wide fourth grade poster contest and the high school historical essay contest are already underway. Next month, poem and a beard-growing contests will be announced. An historical art contest will be announced early next year. Other ongoing events in the spring and summer include a display of a model of the courthouse dome, county-wide historical geo-caching, centennial quilt construction, a centennial float on the 4th of July, a cemetery walk and a tour of select historic homes.
The Centennial culminates with two significant dates: Saturday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 8.
“On Sept. 20, we'll be celebrating by recreating 1908,” said co-chair Guy Hansen. “On Nov. 8, the focus is the re-dedication of the courthouse, with a reenactment of the laying of the cornerstone by the Masons, as was done in 1908.”
The Sept. 20 activities include reenactments in period dress on the courthouse square, horse and buggy driving, an old-fashioned picnic, guided tours of the courthouse, guided walking tours of area historic homes, a quilt display, food booths, live period music, and guided tours of Rhinelander City Hall by Mayor Dick Johns, in honor of that building's centennial. Simultaneously, events will take place at the Pioneer Park Logging Museum Complex, featuring the staff in period dress, a lumberjack stew dinner, reenactments and demonstrations of traditional crafts, a ballgame with 1908 rules and dress, horse-drawn wagon rides to the courthouse and city hall and other activities.
On Nov. 8, a full day is planned that includes courthouse reenactments; a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Lodge; guided courthouse tours; ongoing live music in the courthouse rotunda, a laying-of-the-cornerstone ceremony; birthday cake; a poetry reading ; awards given for poems, essays and historical art; and the quilt raffle drawing.
A complete list of the Courthouse Centennial's upcoming events, contest rules and entry forms, and photos of the historical building can be found at the Oneida County website: www.co.oneida.wi.gov under Quick Links. New information will be added throughout the year. People are encouraged to write in or call with their ideas or events with which they would like to help. For more information, or to volunteer, call Hansen at 282-5810 or co-chair Bob Bruso at 369-6144.
