See a whole new world at the YMCA
The underwater world is a magical place! Whether it's in freshwater lakes in the north woods of Wisconsin, or in tropical seas, it's a place inhabited by colorful fish and diverse aquatic life. It's all there for you when you enter the underwater world.
Since ancient times, people have dived and explored underwater for sport, food and treasures of all kinds. Snorkeling is a fun, easy and economical way to enjoy the beautiful world under the water's surface.
The YMCA's Snorkeling class will help participants learn basic skills in our warm pool. Instructor Al Klaver is trained and experienced, and lifeguards are on duty for all classes. Participants will gain confidence as they learn how to fit and clear a face mask, how to use a variety of kicks underwater using skin diving fins, how to breath in and clear the snorkel, and basic personal water safety skills for the sport.
Klaver has games and tips that will help students improve their snorkeling skills and have fun at the same time.
There are over 100 lakes within Oneida and Vilas Counties that have good visibility for snorkeling and scuba diving.
There are many species of fish to see including fresh water jelly fish. You can often find treasures like fishing lures, anchors, and other interesting items in our lakes!
For that tropical vacation, where snorkelers frequently have the chance to interact with numerous species of aquatic life, this is your chance to prepare for underwater adventures. And if you're curious about what you're seeing, there are field guides and video tapes available with identification information.
The snorkeling class started on Saturday, Nov. 3, but there is still room in the class for additional students. There are two more classes, on Saturdays, Nov. 10 and 17 with time to learn and practice.
We'll also offer the class during our YMCA Winter and Spring sessions.
