(Hiles News) - And the Winner is...

The Scarecrow Yard Decorating Contest has been judged. And it was difficult all the way around. Dorothy Djupstrom and Paul Jenkins were lined up to be judges, but when it came time to look over entries, Paul was in the hospital with an emergency appendectomy!

Finally Kathy Bruenning was selected to fill in for Paul, and the judging was done a day later than planned. But still it was difficult, because there were so many good displays. Finally the judges came up with the winning entries.

First place, $25, went to Amy Bukovic and her kids. The judges were impressed with the original idea of the kids' faces, on laminated computer printouts, used for the faces on scarecrows made with the kids' own clothing. Second place, $15, went to Ed and Carol Dancik. Here the judges liked the way they tipped the pumpkins on their sides and used the stems for noses. Third place, $10, went to Bobby and Jolynn Pfeiffer for a display the judges felt was really cute.

The difficult part was that there were others that were also outstanding, among them Karl and Collette Guth's and Nancy and Carl Tauer's. If you get a chance, take a drive around Hiles and have a look at the nice job so many of your neighbors have done with their yards.

Amy Bukovic told the Service Club that her family had agreed beforehand that if they won any money they would donate it to the Playground Project.

Bake Sale Ahead

The Playground Committee will be having a bake sale to raise money for the Playground Project on November 16 which is the Friday before the opening of deer season. It will be at the Hiles Outpost, starting about 8 a.m. They welcome any and all donations of baked goods. Some of the “best sellers” are home baked bread, pies and cookies. At their previous sale they also had some craft items for sale. If you have any questions, call Amy Bukovic at 649-3136.

Get Well Wishes...

Are sent to Paul Jenkins who had his appendix out last week. He was still in the hospital as I write this. Paul, your friends and neighbors hope you will soon be home and feeling much better.

About November

“No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,

No comfortable feel in any member -

No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,

No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds -

November!”

- Thomas Hood, No!

“November comes

And November goes,

With the last red berries

And the first white snows.

With night coming early,

And dawn coming late,

And ice in the bucket

And frost by the gate.

The fires burn

And the kettles sing,

And earth sinks to rest

Until next spring.”

- Clyde Watson
